Re: New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

Thanks Dads toy. The engine will be liberated today or tomorrow depending on when I can grab an extra body to spot me. Believe me if it's something top end I would be pleased as hell. But, i'm not betting on it. On the plus side, I have a line on an engine that is said to only have 4k miles on it. W...

Re: New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

You are correct sir. It became pretty obvious that he was mistaken when I got a chance to look at it. Pretty sure the whole oil delivery system is different as well. From what I've read, I may be able to use an 83 or an 85 in addition to the 84. But, i'm still researching. If i can find a proven run...

Re: New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

Let me ask you a question.. Where would I find a source for engine swap compatibility? My mechanic has a low mile engine from a 92 CB750 nighthawk that he believes would swap right over. But, I want to double check to make sure. Any leads on such info...? thanks again

Re: New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

Thanks so much for your help George. After putting a bit of oil in the cylinder with poor compression, I did see a significant improvement. Almost 150 psi cold. As far as the piston movement, all I did was manually cycle through pistons and when they were a touch past tdc i put a wood dowel down the...

For what it's worth, the washer is one of the ones that fit over the cylinder head bolts.

All the rest of the junk in your picture is metallic?

yes all the other material was picked up with a magnet....

Re: New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

So cold compression test from left to right facing front of bike. 135, 90, 125, 140.
The service limit spec for warm compression test is 156. The piston movement a noticed was on 3 the one that read 125.
What do you make of all that @Georgesweety?

Re: New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

Thanks George and Folsoml. Makes sense, the condition of the valve cover install was kind of appalling. RTV everywhere, loose hand tight bolts. After work today I will put the oil pan back on fill her with oil, and run a compression test. I already recharged the battery so we shall see what we get. ...

Re: New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

Yes sir I can definitely do a compression test, What exactly am I looking for? I mean aside from good compression.... What are my options if I do have compression. Thanks, I really appreciate your help here.

Re: New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

Pulled the plugs and checked for play in the pistons and there is definitely movement in cylinder two. I may just end up parting this out :(

Re: New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

Well she's off. Slept on it went to work, came home and went with the 2x2,5# hammer method. The screen looked pretty good surprisingly.. 20180303_171503.jpg That's where the good news ends :( In the pan I found the following...Quarter for scale.. 20180303_172810.jpg Looks like a run away washer and ...

Re: New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

Once i get the pan off i feel like I'll be happy if I just find a bunch of RTV. It's metal shavings i'm more worried about :)

Re: New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

Thanks for the the input guys, i appreciate you taking the time to respond. I will most certainly continue to search this forum for info that is relevant to my Nighthawk. That being said, as you mentioned this forum is more SOHC centric and I certainly would hate to barrage yall with questions that ...

New to forum, new to Nighthawks. Howdy...

Hey all, just picked up my first Nighthawk yesterday. 1984 CB650 SC Got her for $400. Looks like everything is there for the most part. Somebody has definitely had the valve cover off cause the gasket is jacked and there's a bunch of RTV or silicone all over it. When I picked it up there was just en...
