Re: Important engine rebuilt questions.

i am at the exact same stage of my rebuild (replacing the valve head). i would have suggested running a tap through all the threads and a die over all the bolts, but it looks like you have everything under control.

nice job!

Re: Suspension spring rates

just pulled this off some website "for example: a 10lb to 25lb progressive spring will need 10lb to compress it the first inch, then 13lb the next inch, and so on, until the end of the travel; it will take 25lb to compress it the last inch. The benefit of this is that the spring can be soft eno...

Re: Runs strong 10 15 miles then cuts out?

i've had similar mysterious fuel delivery problems from a badly run fuel line and bad petcock. get some fuel hose and build a new fuel line that avoids any bends...if the tank is clean and you are comfortable doing so, leave the filter out of the equation for the time being. test it on a full tank o...

Re: Electrical Help!

look over the positive battery cable and make sure it isn't frayed and contacting the frame anywhere. after that, trace the wires from there and look for any breaks where wires or the wiring harness come into contact with each other or the frame. if it's in the harness, you have your work cut out fo...

Re: Road Trip San Francisco-Vancouver-San Francisco

i've done a few big trips on my 650. make sure you bring your tools, a few spare cables (throttle, clutch) some jb weld, bailing wire and a CAA or AAA card. and a cellphone.

Re: Valve stem seals, possible with head in place?

probably late on the draw here, but a harbour freight or princess auto small c clamp style compressor worked for me with a brass nut with a slot cut out of it. 12$ and 20 minutes.

it's not a bad idea to get the cylinders and pistons scoped for wear.

another good trick for carb refit is to use a compression strap.

Re: Valve stem seals, possible with head in place?

volker has a little write up on here of his experience with it...i believe he doesn't feel it's much of a shortcut.

i have one that's gone, too, and it is a tempting mid-season fix.

Re: New charging question

if it were me i would suspect the battery at this point. it may not be the only problem, but it seems like it might be one of them. is the bike starting with the current battery? i'm also still curious what the voltage is at idle, and what it is when you rev it up. how old is the battery...have you ...

Re: 85 Nighthawk 650SC Running Rough Help!
