Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Glad it worked! Thanks for posting the details, especially on not needing the start booster. It's strange on how some bikes need it and some don't. Opening the spark gap does improve performance, but puts stress on the entire system. As you could tell, it forced the spark away from the intended loca...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

My resistor colors are orange white gold gold That would definitely explain the 9.9v at G. Orange white gold gold is not correct. That is 3.9 ohms. They should be orange white red. That is 3.9k ohms, or 3900 ohms. The other issue with the booster is that it should get no voltage while running. Sinc...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

The starter solenoid is not actually grounded until the clutch lever is pulled in. That may be a problem since there is a mystery "rectifier" also going to the starter solenoid winding. Without knowing what the "rectifier" is for, or connected to, it's hard to say for sure what i...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

I will have to look at the diagram when I get home. (My work computer blocks some images.) If G measures 9v when you press the starter button, then the pickups are likely not grounded, or there is some other wiring issue with the resistors etc. When you say the pickups measure ".539", I as...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

If there was a way for the G terminal to internally get shorted to a 12v source, that might explain it, but the G terminal is a very high-impedance input. I would not expect the G terminal to fail that way. When you get time, the first thing is to try to isolate the pickup wiring. I realize you have...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

With ignition on, and the starter button NOT pushed, you should only have close to 0 volts on the G terminal. If there is 9+ volts, then there is voltage getting into the pickup wiring from somewhere. With the ignition on, and the starter button pushed, the voltage on G should be about 1 to 2 volts....

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Also I'm taking 12v into one side of each coil from the ignition switch, the other side is my 2 pickup wires (BLU + YEL). Does it matter which side these plug into? Also does the plug orientation matter in relation to this? I assume you did not mean that you hooked up the pickup wires directly to t...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Can you verify the color-wire useage. It looks like: Red is 12v from starter button. White is 12v from the ignition switch. Green is ground. Copper Braid is ground going to the board, for the LED and pickups. Are the twoheavy black wires to the negative side of the pickups? Skiny black is for the LE...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Yellow and Yellow/White go to the reluctor for cylinders 2/3 Blue and Blue/White go to the reluctor for cylinders 1/4 If you're missing the white tubing (which determines the reluctor polarity) I'm not sure how to determine which is which, other than diving the bike and seeing which way runs better...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

The primary side of the GM coils will be near zero. Actually somewhere around .4 to .6 ohms. If you are getting spark from that test, then put everything back the way it should be, then swap the pickup wires at the G teminals. If the problem moves, then one pickup is bad or has a spec different from...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Remember to always leave some sort of path for the coil energy to discharge through, otherwise the coil and/or igniter can die instantly. That means both high tension leads from a coil must have a path to each other somehow. They can just touch each other, or you can have spark plugs in the wires an...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Since you basically have two of everything, you should be able to do some swapping of parts/wires to see if the problem follows a particular part. Often, during construction, something can get shorted by touching a wire or frame unexpectedly and bam that's it, dead igniter or pickup or diode. Also, ...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

One simple test you can do is to simply connect and disconnect 12v to the G terminal, briefly. If that action does not generate a spark, then there is a major, fundamental flaw somewhere. Not a minor one related to dwell, start-boost etc. That is, with nothing connected to W. Nothing else connected...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Sorry to take so long in getting back to this, but for some reason, this fall/winter has been very busy with all sorts of ignition requests. Schooldageek, sorry you are having so much trouble with the mod. There are plenty of examples of it working on other CB's. That is, the 4-pin module with GM co...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

A square plate of aluminum, 10cm by 10cm, has 100 square cm of surface area per side, giving 200 square cm of surface area total. Yes, it could also be notated as 100 cm^2 per side, giving 200 cm^2 total. The only issue is it should be rather ridgid in order to make sure the module will get full con...
