Re: Turning petcock to "on" kills the engine
Sounds completely opposite of what a good petcock does. My first guess is that you have your directions mixed up. Some petcocks use the lever to point, some petcocks actually have a triangle "arrow" opposite the end of the lever to point. True "off" should kill the engine in one ...

Re: Ignitor smokes then main 30a fuse blows
Ignition switch tested fine, solid clicks, and only .1 ohm. Masika still had problems after the initial ride and found the white rotor brush wire was shorting to the case (we simply ran out of time at 11 p.m.) and also found a broken main wire near the coils that I missed because the rubber jacket w...

Re: Cheap Replacement Regulator
I am not discouraging people that want to upgrade their rectifier portion of the circuit, but I have come up with a theory that needs tested with a R/R that overcharges. I no longer own any CB650 so I cannot contribute other than theory. On a field rotor bike that is OVERCHARGING it may be possible ...

Re: Ignitor smokes then main 30a fuse blows
..., but should it only conduct 12v in one direction? Yes it should. This is the typical application of a rectifier/diode like that. In this case it serves to decouple the neutral lamp from the clutch switch as you already observed. Should have no further effect. It would however be strange if this...

Re: Ignitor smokes then main 30a fuse blows
Does anyone know what the single rectifier does located near the two ignition coils? I see by the various schematics that it is between the neutral switch and the clutch switch, but should it only conduct 12v in one direction? Maskias conducted 12v in both directions so I removed it, the noticeable ...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade
You are correct, sir. Masika's bike ran fine from the beginning, I only replaced the rotor, and the voltage returned to normal during charging, after I got it home and replaced it. The first two spark units blew under charging load, the last unit blew with the R/R disconnected completely. The only d...

Even though resistors are not polar, it would make sense to get them right, here are the basic resistors that can be used on 530 Ohm reluctors. http://imageshack.us/a/img28/9283/k2fb.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img89/219/kxeo.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img33/7595/py6u.jpg

Pretty sick setup, love the breadboard, hope it is a bar-hopper and not your primary ride unless you spray it with that waterproof rubber you see on TV.

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade
To test the igniter and coil, hook everything up except the G terminal. Then just very briefly apply and remove voltage to the G terminal. Removing the voltage will cause the spark. The voltage can be anywhere from 2 volts to 12v. But make sure G is not cnnected to anything else. I will try and rem...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade
I agree that most motorcycle work should be done in a padded room. As far as I remember the ignition switch contains springs and balls. Nevertheless a good idea to clean off there after 30 years. Especially if you have a suspiciously high charging voltage that even rises if you switch the hea...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade
My resistor colors are orange white gold gold That would definitely explain the 9.9v at G. Orange white gold gold is not correct. That is 3.9 ohms. They should be orange white red. That is 3.9k ohms, or 3900 ohms. I will also check my originals if I even have them anymore, but this is good informat...

Re: Charging system
The rotors are the most common failure of the charging system because they are only held together by epoxy and are subjected to extreme heat and movement. I have had to purchase one each in the last year for my 79 and 81 respectively, they were both bad after 32-34 years in service. I used customrew...

Re: Tire specs
Typically you can go up one size from stock without problems. It will change the height and handling characteristics though. It can be difficult to find a tire like that as there are many out there to choose from. In the automotive industry it is called a +1. They usually lower the aspect ratio thou...

Re: Ignitor smokes then main 30a fuse blows
on the 3rd time the both cdis quit not getting as hot just warm and the main fuse turned white like it wanted to blow but didnt. as these are slow blowing correct? Masika, for a primer on fuses, you can check wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuse_%28electrical%29 Specifically when the bike w...

Re: Ignitor smokes then main 30a fuse blows
Just to track the facts precisely: The bike will start with the bike battery. Chaging is deactivated (probably RRR plug pulled?). It will start and run for a while but as soon as you exceed 4000rpm it will kill both ignitors simultaneously and also blow the 30A fuse? Are these details correct or di...
