Re: Stator issues/replacement

You can make a very effective penetrating lubricant out of a 50/50 mixture of acetone and ATF transmission fluid. Put some of this on it and let it sit for a bit. Sadly, on the CB650 I rebuilt, I never was able to get those screws free. :(

I'm not sure I understand your answer to George's question about the choke lever. I'm not familiar with the Nighthawk choke lever either. Is the high idle when the choke is closed or open?

Re: Stator issues/replacement

I usually try an impact driver right from the start. I find these screws are a pain in the ass under the best of circumstances.

Re: Where to chop exhaust?

That is one good thing about the CV carbs. They will automatically compensate for an exhaust change.

Edit: Just for clarity: Your bike does not have CV carbs (unless a previous owner changed them).

Re: Stator issues/replacement

If you've got the time to try it with the new rotor and stator, I'd wait.

BTW, did you test the current rotor and stator? I've seem some ugly ones that cleaned up nicely and still worked.

Just so you know, the green wire is your neutral switch and the blue one is your oil pressure switch.

Sadly, the same as what you were already experiencing--failure to charge. :(

Re: Stator issues/replacement

Yeah, that's pretty bad. You find that you need a new regulator/rectifier as well. A bad rotor can burn it out. :(

Re: question about spark plug, cap, and wires replacement

Before you buy new ones, try clipping about 1/4 of an inch off both ends of the plug wires. Sometimes the ends get corroded inside the insulation. Clipping them gets fresh new wire on the contact ends. If you want to buy new wires, you can buy 7mm wire (the size you need) in bulk from most auto part...

Re: why would pipes #1 & 3 be cool?

Take a look at this thread when you have a chance: http://hondacb650.com/viewtopic.php?t=5932 That was me and the first bike on which I ever worked. A man called Volker_P showed remarkable patience as he walked me through getting this thing up and running. There were times when I felt like quitting ...

Your tank reminds me of the Sportster I rebuilt. As a gag, I put this emblem on the tank. It was only put there for the picture.

What do you mean when you say you "torched" something?

George is dead on accurate. Try one thing and see what happens. Do not chase your tail.

That rubber stop, does it fit on the exhaust? I have 4into1 exhaust on my bike..

How is your bike coming along?

There is a tab on the original stock exhaust where the rubber stop fits. You may have to fabricate something for an aftermarket exhaust.
