Re: Bad news
I'm glad to hear you're in (more or less) one piece. I hope you mend quickly and get this all put behind you soon. Thanks for all your excellent service and help here on the forum. We'll miss you, so I hope you drop in with an occasional picture of where your dirtbike takes you.

Don't forget to clean out the coating of mineral spirits that WD-40 leaves behind before you try to seal it.

Reposting this from another thread: Re the plugs: If you don't have the Honda spark plug tool (from the tool bag), you may have to modify a socket to fit. There are a hundred threads on the internet on how to get these plugs out, where you can maybe find a socket, etc. I, having no luck finding this...

Re: New to the forum, new '81 CB650C
I picked up an '81 CB650C parts bike across town for a song and a dance. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5wPcS0U-4AM/Uj7-KMGoTWI/AAAAAAAAEXw/Iu-5OG325Pw/w465-h297/IMG_20130921_105249.jpg It has a little right-side damage. It looks like it suffered some mild right-side incident (both right side tu...

12.0 V open-circuit (nothing loading it) is a nearly-fully-dead battery. ~12.6 V is charged.

Hmm. Good idea. 50 mW LED lamp versus a 2 to 3 W lamp, times a few of them...
Any idea where I might find a list of the bulb sizes used behind the indicator panel and inside the gauges?

How much extra current is available on an '81 CB650C?
I know that the CB650s of this era have a reputation for anemic charge systems, but I'm wondering if anyone has tested just how anemic. I'd like to steal almost exactly one amp (worst-case), i.e. about 12-14 W, to charge my amateur radio handheld in the tank bag while on a long upcoming trip. Normal...

Re: Bypassing CV carbs vacuum controlled petcock
Hmmm. My '81 CB650C (which is 99.8% identical to the CB650) shut-off has the vacuum port on the rear and a completely different shape. It looks more like the one on the right in this earlier picture you linked , but with the port facing rearward instead of coaxial with the fuel lines. For all I know...

Re: Looking to buy cb650 custom: blue smoke on start up
Yeah, that much oil after only a day of sitting: price the motorcycle as if the engine is going to need to be pulled apart at some level. I.e., not a running motorcycle, because it won't run for long as-is. (You'll foul plugs like mad, for one.)

Re: Looking to buy cb650 custom: blue smoke on start up
Before you started it, how long had it sat since it was last started? (That is, how long did it take to accumulate that much oil to burn?)

Re: 80 cb650c valve clearance? ...I'm NOT 180 degrees off
You have spark on both the compression stroke *and* the exhaust stroke. This motorcycle uses a "wasted spark" system, where it fires 1 & 4 at the same time, 2 & 3 at the same time. That means either 1 *or* 4 will be on the compression stroke, but both will spark; 180 degrees of cra...

Re: 1981 CB650C problem with ... carbs? Ignition? Help!
Over two days of riding 70 total miles the twisting roads in the Appalachians here, rough gas pump math says ~46 mpg (20 km/L). Based on my trip lengths, average speeds were around 35-40 mph.
