Re: 79 CB650 - Main Fuse Question + Starter Problems
FordMan - I am far from an experienced mechanic myself, as evident by my incessant and numerous questions :-). Good point re: the rolling in 5th gear/clutch slippage... I can certainly remove the ignition and/or stator cover - I was just hoping someone could tell me what sized socket to use on eithe...

Re: 79 CB650 - Starter Problems UPDATE
Thanks again for all your help, fellas. Update - On Monday, I was able to: 1. cleaned my carbon dust-filled starter motor and confirmed brushes were within spec (both ~10mm) 2. cleaned all contacts/wires along the path from the battery to the starter motor 3. cleaned a very dirty and greasy neutral ...

Re: Reupholstered / reshaped CB650 seat
Is this a 1980 seat? Looking at your bike, looks like you have a 79 tank. Sweet ride - see you around the streets of ATX! (Once I get my bike running...)

Re: 79 CB650 - Main Fuse Question + Starter Problems
Folsoml & MiGhost - the previous pic was taken when I cleaning all the connections. Here are some pics below of it reassembled with the new fuse holder installed (I know I've left alot of extra wire there...I just wanted to test the setup first and will trim later :-) ): https://farm4.staticfli...

Re: 79 CB650 - Main Fuse Question + Starter Problems
FordMan - I'll inspect and clean that switch too - I get a feeling I'll be doing alot of inspecting and cleaning on this rebuild  Folsoml - thanks for confirming 30A. Why would the actual solenoid say "15A", is this the wrong solenoid for my bike? Does it matter? I bought an inline ...

79 CB650 - Main Fuse Question + Starter Problems
Hi Fellas, looking for some help. Questions first, then background after: 1. What should the main fuse amp rating be on a stock 79 CB650? I'm talking about the fuse that is housed under the plastic cover of the starter solenoid. a) I see on multiple sites that it should be 30A, but on my bike it say...

Re: “New” 1979 CB650 Owner – seeking help, advice, knowledge
MiGhost - I was worried about that too, but I was able to roll the bike in 5th gear with no clutch - that confirms the motor is not seized, right? What size socket is the bolt I would want to turn? I plan to really dig into it this Thursday - so I'll let you know what I find out! Thanks to all for y...

Re: “New” 1979 CB650 Owner – seeking help, advice, knowledge
Quick update all - I've decided I want to at least try to start the engine before I split the cases - that way I know I've put everything back together to the same or better :-). I tried bridging the solenoid terminals with 1) the original battery, 2) while jumped to a non-running car batter, and 3)...

Re: Blown head gasket - stay away?
MiGhost - thanks for the advice (again). I'm going to hold off for now and see if a better candidate shows up online/locally, and once I disassemble the engine and get a really good idea as to what needs addressing.

Re: “New” 1979 CB650 Owner – seeking help, advice, knowledge
Folsoml - thanks for the link! I'll try this ASAP and post the results in a soon-be-created build / project log / write up thread. Thanks for your responses - these were my initial burning questions. MiGhost - hmm...good hypothesis. I guess I'll know for sure when I disassemble the head and see what...

Blown head gasket - stay away?
Hi guys, I just picked up a 1979 CB650. The engine and it's history are iffy (see my other post), so I was looking for spare engines online. I found one for $200 but it had a previously blown head gasket. Is this crazy? Should I stay away? Or are there enough salvageable parts despite the blown head...

Re: “New” 1979 CB650 Owner – seeking help, advice, knowledge
Thanks for the responses, fellas! CB650 - I'm located in Austin, TX. Many Texans on this board? Folsoml - thanks for the tip. I suspect my battery is weak - if this doesn't work with the battery, would you advise connecting the posts while the bike is jump" connected to a non-running car battery?
