Re: Chain vs. Shaft drive
I've had numerous bikes with shaft drive, namely Moto Guzzis ('74 Eldo LAPD, '78 V50, '95 1100 Sport, '98 EV, '03 Jackal). They're MUCH easier on maintenance, basically keep the fluid levels topped off and grease the fittings every now and then. A shaft setup is heavier than a chain, but the sturdin...

Re: Missing air filter cover
So are you saying it pulls past 4800 rpms on the way up to 85km/h, but once you get there and it's around 4800 rpms it falls off? If it has issues pulling past 4800 rpms in all gears, then it sounds like a carb/fuel delivery issue to me. From when I got my carbs done, they can be somewhat fussy with...

Re: Missing air filter cover
That's not it. I bought my '79 CB650 with less than 7K miles, and had to have an indy shop go thru it, especially the carbs. They got it all dialed in, and I actually removed the air filter cover to help it idle a little better. If you compare the small air filter cover opening, and in my case it wa...

Re: Just started riding. Comfort questions on long trips.
There's a lot of things that can impact riding comfort from an ergonomic standpoint, versus bike condition. Sitting on the bike, how is the feel of the seat? How's the reach to the handlebars? What do the grips feel like? How's the reach to the foot controls? Some bikes that I've had the previous ow...

Re: rocker covers
Use foamy oven cleaner...spread out some newspaper, put the pieces down, spray with oven cleaner, let soak 15-20 minutes, put on some heavy latex dishwashing gloves, use some 000 to 0000 steel wool to rub it off, and they should pretty much be stripped down to the bare aluminum.

Re: SS brake lines
Yea might just look local. Socal what header is that? You can check "cyclebrakes.com", and look for a Galfer line for your bike. I've ordered s/s lines thru them on several other bikes I've had. I think the local shop that was doing some work on my CB650 went ahead and made the one I have...

I like the "patina" of the gas tank! Those four mufflers are just screaming for the hole saw mod!

I have one on my '79. Any time would be a good time to upgrade to s/s brake lines!

Re: Need cafe modification advise
Seat: get a picture of how you want the seat to look (I'm assuming a solo seat look, with the hump behind it?), and take it to an upholstery shop. They should be able to modify your stock seat to look like that without too much effort. Turn signals: second on don't go with LEDs, dual filaments up fr...

Re: Can you suggest any new rear shocks?
I like them. Do you still have the add for them? I was going to go with the 750/900 ones for $90. eBay seller's name is "osma-motor" http://www.ebay.com/itm/13-5-340mm-PAIR-AIR-SHOCK-ABSORBER-CLEVIS-HONDA-CB-750-RD-350-CB-BLACK-GOLD-NEW-/251193338986?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&h...

Re: Can you suggest any new rear shocks?
I got a replacement set of rear shocks off ebay, wanted something that had black springs and gold reservoir bodies. People on the SOHC forum really bagged on me for getting these, saying they're crap, they'll break, etc, etc. I ignored their comments got them anyway. So far they work fine, no signs ...

Re: Air Filter Cover Question
I had the opposite issue, in that the engine stumbled at low rpms, like right when you're taking off. I replaced the air filter with a new one, and decided to leave the filter cover off, and just put a small aluminum bracket across the filter that's held in place with the two cover bolts. The openin...

Re: Finally got a hold of a 1979!
Those could be my "before" pics, lol! I got mine with around 6000 miles, PO took decent care of her, already had a chrome 4-1, but other than that, it was stock. I changed the handlebars, mirrors, ceramic-coated the exhaust, powdercoated a bunch of engine parts, added new shocks/tires, an ...

Re: My 1979 CB650Z
Nice looking bike, I like the dual disc front end. I don't think those blinkers would be legal here in the States, at least not for directional signals anyway.
