Re: Crazy Bagger-ish Idea.....maybe?

Has anyone Attempted a Bagger build with one of these bikes? The Thread Grey Ghost:'80 CB650C Bagger project is a dead thread, and has a pieced together look, and not on the lines i was thinking. I think it could be done on the cheap. Not so much dead as I have been getting deeper into researching,...

Re: My 1980 CB650 Custom

I've also had people come running across a parking lot to say how much they love my bike... Its a nice feeling when that happens isn't it. I was sitting at a stop sign the other night. when a woman coming thru the intersection stopped her car to tell me my bike was beautiful. There is something to ...

Re: jet needle position?

If you have adjustable needles in the PD carbs. They are aftermarket needles from a rebuilt kit. Stock needles are not adjustable. That said. You remove the top covers, and loosen the shaft lock screws on the lift arm. Rotate the lift the arm to disengauge the lift arm from the slide. You can then l...

Re: Need Gearing Advice

Lets start off with the chain. You will stay with the same style chain as what you already have. Which is 530-104 link. On the sprockets. I agree that the aluminum 37 tooth sprocket will wear significantly faster than a steel 38 tooth sprocket. There is such minimal change in the rpm (125 rpm) betwe...

Re: “New” 1979 CB650 Owner – seeking help, advice, knowledge

With the engine confirmed to be free. The next step would be to check the starter. To do this connect a fully charged battery as normal. Then instead of jumping the solenoid. You will jump to the starter itself. Use the jumper cable from the battery + to the cable mount on the starter. This will byp...

Re: “New” 1979 CB650 Owner – seeking help, advice, knowledge

At this point you need to check if the engine is siezed, or not. You can do it one of two ways. 1. Put the bike in gear. While holding the clutch in. Start rolling the bike, and let the clutch out. If the motor is free you will feel the motor bump as it comes up on compression. If the motor is sieze...

Re: Sources of 650 Engine Parts

You will likely find the primary tensioner is still good. They are rarely, if ever a problem. The biggest problem with the chains, guides, and tensioners would be the front cam chain guide. As you are looking at a full rebuild. The starter clutch will be another area to plan on. The srings, caps, an...

Not really the nature of this beast, but an loose timing chain. When properly tensioned the timing chain is actually fairly quiet.

Re: Sources of 650 Engine Parts

Understandable. As Mike will tell you. The 650 heads are already pretty good, and will not need much work. Stage 2 will probably turn that bike into a monster. Unfortunately, Better cams are not readily available for the 650. You could drop in a hot 550 cam, but it would require the the same parts (...

You will need to remove some of the thickness of the sprocket from the sides to match the thickness of the stock sprocket.. Either by sanding, or grinding.

Just bought on off ebay DK has them also. they need to be narrowed down a little. And for you gearing chart isnt there diff gears for the custom/nitehawk vs the standards? Seems to me the standards always had the 16 and the customs had the 17. All my customs have. You can find a 37 rear also. I sta...

Re: engine smoking and clicking

The top of the drive chain is under tension while under power\load. When you change to coasting. This changes the the top of the drive chain to being slack. Which allows the chain to ride up on the front sprocket, and tap against the side cover on the engine.

MiGhost - hmm...good hypothesis. I guess I'll know for sure when I disassemble the head and see what the surface looks like from the "inside"? And what non-OEM hardware do you observe in the picture? This will be my first in-depth motor work, so I don't know what belongs and what does not...

Where did you find the 18 front sprocket?

18\38 would give 70.5mph @ 4800 rpm
