Re: front brake light switch
Something seems missing here, let's try to clarify. According to the wiring diagram you should have a green/white (12V from fuse box) and a green/yellow cable that share the common red plug connector to the handlebar right side stuff as front brake switch, starter button and engine kill switch. Or f...

Re: 1982 CB650 (standard?) Carburetor
Welcome here! :D Not bad for the money! As you already found out yourself, motorcycle stuff is susceptible. So it is helpful to have look into a manual (see e.g. the link in my signature) before you try to open something. You find a lot of stuff in this forum, too. In most cases pictures are still t...

Re: 1980 cb650 ignition system
"pulser coils" are the black, angled boxes with blue and yellow cables placed on the pulse generator plate in front to the ignition advancer.
You can find some details to the CB650 ignition system on page 17-3 in the manual linked below.

Re: 1980 cb650 ignition system
Usually I prefer mechanic stuff to electric stuff, but not in this case. The stock ignition system is not that susceptible beyond the black stuff coming out of the CDIs /spark units. In my case this was correlated to an enhanced charging voltage caused by a weak contact in the igniton switch. Often ...

Re: Press in jet size? Only runs with choke open
The throttle spring is very strong. So either the spring is not in proper position or something serious blocks the throttle mechanically.

Re: 1980 cb650 ignition system
The CB650 stock ignition uses pulser coils with CDIs (spark units). If you want to get rid of the CDIs, you need to replace the pulser coils by points and possibly you need different ignition coils, too. If you have a complete CB550 ignition it should basically work for a 650, too. High rpms might b...

Re: Cam chain
I used to press the tensioner rail with a long enough screwdriver to the rear and tighten the tensioner nut to fix it in that position. First put the chain on the sprocket, then sprocket with chain on the camshaft. It is important to verify timing again after the tensioner snapped back when the nut ...

Re: Press in jet size? Only runs with choke open
Welcome here! :D bike looks like good basis with lots of work. The guy had gotten the carbs rebuilt and hydroblasted. When he got it going it would only run on full choke. It sat for a year before I purchased it. First thing I noticed was that the tank interior was in bad shape. Lots of flaking rust...

Re: 81 cb650 slow jet question
Welcome here! :D There are many reasons for poor idle, slow jets is only one possibility. So check valves, plugs, ignition, air leaks etc. before you pull the carbs. No fun to pull or install them. In any case here you can find a link to a very good manual for the CV carbs: http://www.hondacb650.com...

Re: Valve cover gasket leaking
Welcome here! :D In fact CB650 valve cover seals are a bit special. Here is an article how to get along with them: http://www.hondacb650.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14875&p=95038 Your issue seem the side covers. Mount the covers without the seals first and measure the gap. Note that too long bol...

Re: Mutually exclusive carburetor issues
Thanks for the final report and the check list. I think I will include it in my technical internal link list. From what I heard K&N filters seem typically less restrictive. It might be different in this case. Anyway It would be interesting to see your bike running with a stock air filter. Becaus...

Re: Mutually exclusive carburetor issues
All headers were equally hot. At 1600 rpm "cold" idle this would mean it runs on all four from the beginning. Was choke still pulled then? I was having issues with #2 cylinder again (going back to issue #1), however, I believe that is related to more gunk/rust/dirt in the carbs that I nev...

Re: Mutually exclusive carburetor issues
Further troubleshooting: The idle screw works excellent when the bike is cold. When i first start it i can manipulate the idle from 1,400 to higher as needed.I can't seem to get it to idle lower than 1,400 though... The engine should stop if you turn out the black idle knob completely (when choke i...

Re: Mutually exclusive carburetor issues
So throttle spring and carb boots seem no problem. My assumption is that your "issue1" means it does not run on all four. During "issue1" you should have one or two headers that are significantly colder. Worth to check. A CB650 usually runs quite fine up to 60mph on three cylinde...
