Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Ok, so where does the relay go then? I measured both my "reluctors" I guess..on the bike due to Lou's instruction and they were both 525. So my resistors are both 3.9k. Being a bias circuit to begin with I guess I then understood the "difference" between the four prong and seven ...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Right, that was exactly what I was thinking. But forgive my stupidity, are the reluctors on the bike or in the modules?

On your diagram on page one, you have two diodes in serial.

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

As for the diodes, in your modified circuit you talk about how the bias circuit needs to be different, but there is only one straight path. I thought that the backwards voltage needed to be regulated independently to the positive pickups in the four prong module. I can't use one diode and a straight...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Hi Pinhead! In the CB650 Schematic, the same black and white ignition power wire feeds the two coils, but I guess I cannot determine how it returns to ground except by "jumping" to the block by making sparks in the chambers. The blue and the yellow module wires feed the coils as well. Now ...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Now I finally understand the double diode with the four pin module as opposed to the single diode in the seven pin module. :(

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

OK, hopefully I have made proper assumptions following the original diagram. I ask for everyone's input. I am keeping the new ignition modules next to the battery under the seat where my originals are and I plan on doing the mod on Sunday the 18th. The modules are both connected to a heatsink with t...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Thanks, Lou. Your lesson is a nice refresher. I knew all that, I just couldn't determine by the language of your article if I was supposed to measure the HEI module from G to the ground for the measurement or the two wires unplugged on the bike, that is all. Thank you very much for clearing this up.

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

The first thing to do is simply measure the resistance of the pickups themselves to make sure they are in the normally expected range. That would be somewhere around 530 ohms +/- 10% or so. As long as they are, then 3.9k ohms should work for both. Ugh, I am still confused then. I am measuring the p...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Hi Volker, 20 years on the same bike is quite a feat. I think what we are trying to do here is shortcut all of your TLC with OEM over the years and jump immediately from cold starting with a poorly maintained second or third owner 30yr old OEM ignition, pay the money (pony up) and go to the latest d...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

Hi Lou, can't thank you enough for all of your work... When measuring the "G" terminal pickup for ohms to select the resistor needed, is it measured to the ground of the module? And since there are two does each need to be matched to the appropriate resistor if they measure differently? An...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

The problem I quickly discovered by going to the junkyard is that unless you have a friendly staff there, or you are going to a pick/pull place that you pay an entrance fee to get in the gates, the options are far too extensive to be able to make sense of it all. A normal junkyard does not pull off ...

Re: GM HEI: Cheap and Extremely Effective Ignition Upgrade

As of this uposting, I am a member and this is my first post. I read all of your messages for the scandalous details but I am left with this: I am upgrading a female freind. She bought the notorious "CB650C"...(psst...a real PERSON!) When I met her she had a fried rectifier, but she wasn't...
