Finally got a hold of a 1979!

Postby Pbiggs » Mon Mar 23, 2015 2:24 pm

I've been waiting awhile for the Rc03 650s for awhile now, I finally found one a bit of a drive away. But here she is, only one owner has been sitting in a garage since 85.

just recently the p.o tried to get it back up and running but to no avail. When I went through the carbs I found all new gaskets new t vents and and accelerator pump. This one will have to sit til I finish my other 650. Of course I did do a comp check on it which always seems to be disappointing, Read no higher then 60 on all cyls, A lot of carbon build up on the valves, I Squirted a bit of seafoam/oil mix inside the intake exhaust and cylinders to sit for a bit.

Very nice. Comp might come up once everything is settled in again. What are your plans for her?
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

Those could be my "before" pics, lol! I got mine with around 6000 miles, PO took decent care of her, already had a chrome 4-1, but other than that, it was stock. I changed the handlebars, mirrors, ceramic-coated the exhaust, powdercoated a bunch of engine parts, added new shocks/tires, an s/s brake line, Tarozzi fork brace, etc. It's pretty much done now, so I get it ride her when the urge strikes me and the weather cooperates.

Nice find!

Hey man, this is MY build thread! ;) Kidding. Looks like some motivation to me, I have to stash this away in the garage until after I finish my other 650, Starting this build will be my gift. As of now I'm thinking of keeping this post updated well when I start the build, I'm going to figure out the issues with low compression, restore, throw on some 1980 spoked rims that have been waiting for a home, open up the airflow, either grab a 4-1 or fabricate some open pipes and then most likely resale. I'm a college student and if I can spend time with a beautiful bike for a little that's great but my plan is to get as much experience as possible with each bike and then move on.

After that time it is mor or less normal that rings are stuck. Rather surprising that you did not stand in a cloud of oil fog after starting it. Rings may become free again when the engine really warmed up for the first time. Until then, it will probably will also smoke considerably beyond 5000rpm.
I had an experience like that after I installed my spare engine that I stored for several (7?) years in the cellar.
