Spare Change Project First Bike

Postby Dads Toy » Fri Mar 16, 2018 7:36 pm

New to this forum and glad I found it. The other forums talk about 550, and 750 bikes. No one really talk about the 650's and they are starting to become a missing breed of bike. So its nice to have just CB650 people.
So here is my story. Always wanted to get a bike and go riding with my friends from work. Also wanted it so I could save on gas and commute to work. A Co-worker had this 1981 Honda CB650C custom in a barn that only has 5700 original miles. Had been stored in the barn for over 5years. Said I could have it for $100. So I had this medicine bottle full of spare change. I cash it in the bank and had enough money to buy the bike and rent a trailer to pick it up. Before taking it home I stop by a car wash and cleaned off over 5yrs of dust and dirt. Wife is piss that I bought it and thought cleaning it a little would help :( Didn't matter, she still piss.
The tires are dry rotted from setting without air in the tires. They hold air but pretty crack up. He also gave me an extra set of carbs. Gas tank was wasted. Top of the tank was like Swiss cheese. So I bought another used tank, rebuilt the carbs, installed a new battery. Replace the choke cable, original was rusted shut. Replace the front brake master cylinder and handle. Rebuilt the front brake calipers with new pistons and seals. Put in a new oil filter and oil. Did all of this without touching the family money. Sold stuff around the house and with what every spare change I could get. Bike Starts and runs great. I am able to ride it around my neighborhood some and has been a lot of fun. I still have much work to do. Mainly get new tires. I am afraid the tires are going to pop if I turn to much or go to fast. Also need to recover the seat and replace the back brakes and drive chain. What you think.

This is what happens with you leave gas in your carbs too long. Had to trash these.

Hi Dads Toy and welcome. First I'd just like to say if those tires have cracks then change them before you ride it again. Next I'd like to say you've done an excellent job of turning that pile of dust into a working motorcycle again :D

Thanks for the kind words. Yes I should replace the tires and hopefully soon. Have to sell off some more stuff in order to get a set of tires. My next issue is figuring out what size chain this takes. I think I need a 530x104L. It has a 0-ring chain on it now and some of the 0-rings are coming off. I cleaned it the best I could and lube it up. But with the age and not knowing the bikes past maintenance history. I think it would be best insurance to replace it when I do the tires.

I think your Wife should be proud of your achievement so far, especially as it hasn't cost her anything  When it comes to replacing the chain I like to do both of the sprockets as well, a worn sprocket will wear out a new chain far quicker. On old plodders like these bikes, I wouldn't bother with top spec chains and sprockets as you'll probably never be giving it a lot of wide open throttle use, cheap and cheerful should last a decent amount of time.

I have another issue which is really needs fix cause this one has really piss the wife off. I have the bike park in the garage. Its out of the way and in an area where I can work on it. Problem I have is there is gas leaking from a hose via the center stand. It is smelling up the garage and coming in the house. She is ready for me to park it at the curb. :? I have to put a ziplock bag over the hose. There is a small drip that come from it. I check the air box where the filter is but no sign of gas. There is this hard plastic plug like thing on the end of the hose. And it looks like it has a small hole in it. What is this hose used for and where is the gas coming from. Could it be my petcock valve is not shutting off and is leaking fuel into a chamber on the air box?
As much as I don't want to. I going to have to remove the carbs and air box again. Need to track down this hose and the source of the gas overflow. Plus this will give me chance to install the factory 120jets back into the carbs. The 108 I think are limiting the performance of the motor.
So I found this diagram. Number 14 is the hose that has gas coming out of it, which is connected to #17 which they say is a storage tank. If you follow the hoses up, what is #31 supposed to be connected too? Can I do away with all of these hoses and just cap them off?

Welcome here!

I would advise against capping anything off that was not originally intended to be capped. You should deal with the leak at the source instead. If you cap off the place where the fuel is draining, once that area fills up, the gas will have no where else to go except into the cylinders. I'd start by taking the fuel line off the carb bank. I'd put the open end of the line into a glass jar or something. Leave the petcock turned off and see if fuel leaks into the jar. If it does, you've identified your problem.

Another potential problem is that a float needle has not seated properly. When you first reinstall carbs (after cleaning or some other maintenance) have something like a heavy screwdriver handy. As you turn on the fuel for the first time, tap on the float bowl for each carb. This will usually get the needles to seat. You usually only have to do it the first time you turn on the fuel after a reinstall.

Thanks for the info. I saw the link to trouble shooting common problems and found an answer to a question I had for some time about the carbs. I once had gas that came out of some hole in between 1/2 and 3/4 carbs. Apparently I am missing the vacuum T-Hoses that go there. This could be my gas smell since this is a vent for the bowls. Man Honda is proud of those t-fittings. I'll have to come up with a solution. I originally was putting a hose to connect the two carbs without a t-fitting. I don't think this will work and cause the floats not to work right. A lot of the links to pictures on that link don't work any more. Wonder is anyone else has recently come up with a new solution.

Hmmm. Just a thought, but I wonder if you could get away with, instead of having a T fitting, just connecting a length of tubing to each one? Then run the tubing over the top of the airbox. I've never tried it, but I wonder if it would work.

I am so glad I found this forum. I was on the SOHC4 forum and didn't get much info from those guys. They are more wrap around CB750 and CB550. But I have found the article about the carbs on this forum which I needed. Just wish I found it earlier when I was rebuilding my carbs. Finding out I really didn't rebuild them right. I did miss some things I should have been better at some details. But over all I did good and its running. Now its fine tuning it. I bench sync the carbs and getting ready to vacuum sync them. But first have to figure out all of these hoses and holding tank. I did fix the missing T-fitting lines by making my own. Guess they get connected to the air box line.

Well after reading the thread about rebuilding the carbs on these CB650. I thought I would go ahead and try and fix the T-Fitting between the carbs.
Some times it is just better to leave things alone. Well I fix the t-fitting issue by using a small piece of fuel line and drilling a small hole in it. Bought a vacuum adapter kit which had an assortment of fittings. Use a reduce fitting and put a small amount of black sealer around the fitting for good measure. So while I was there I notice in the thread I read I was missing a small o-ring for the accelerator pump bowl. Decided to install one since I still had the parts from the rebuilt kit. I went ahead and clean out all the float bowls. Well it was late and went to bed. Next morning I decide to put the 120 original jets back in. When I took the float bowl covers off the floats where stuck all the way out....what the hackers happen. :( Come to find out I didn't blow out the remain carb spray when I clean out the bowls. The rubber on the needles had swelled up and can't be used any more. $50 down the drain. Lucky I still keep the old needles. What do I have to loose. I also took this time to bench sync the carbs. This makes the third time I took these off. This time putting them back on was a pain to get mounted back. Don't know way.
With everything back together it runs like a champ :D No more gas smell. Also fix the vacuum lines going to the air box. So everything is back the way its supposed to be. So far no issues with the old needles. Just makes me mad when I screw something up I am trying to fix. Check out the pictures.
Oh do you think my rear tire needs replace? I am riding around the neighborhood with it. Assisted suicide. But its so much fun to ride. 8)

 I don't know. That back tire is probably fine.

You learned a valuable lesson about carb spray--it will destroy rubber parts. Use brake cleaner spray instead. For whatever reason, it is safe for rubber.
