The twin 650's

Hi folks so the story goes that after having a few 550's (and liking the single cam hondas) and finding space for yet another project, the ebay search began and quickly shortlisted a pair of 650c's at reasonable money, bit of a nail bitting last few mins on ebay and they were mine rejoice. So what had I bought?
Well the mag wheel one was/is an import with no papers needs work but complete and the spoker was in total bits and needing frame repairs but with history and a British born bike itching to get started but life etc has meant them rotting away in a shed, which recently has fallen down leaving me no option but to empty and get rid of it while waiting for a replacement to arrive.
Now having put together a couple of 550's I knew most bits were there but made sense to build the thing up as bits were salvaged from the shed, first the frame repair. The steer stop was missing and part of the bearing housing

So over the space of a week I repaired and painted the frame and got her rolling ill go back and clean up the wheels etc but they're solid and will allow me to test the rest of the bike

Fast forward to this week and the bike is almost complete afew bits sold from my stash in the now decessed shed allowed me to grab some of the missing parts, namely a petrol cap, right hand switch gear, throttle pull cable, clutch lever, brake master cylinder and a new battery, bits still missing are 1 finned exhaust clamp thing, oil filter spacer and spring and possibly an ignition and key (if anyone can help I'd be much appreciateive) plan is to keep the spoke wheel and sell the mag, once I've sorted the relevant paperwork (bike actually runs and moves) more pictures

Now a question was asked about the spoker not running slide carbs, strangely the bike did come with a set but they didn't fit? The cv's did but needed a lot of work to free them off and re fit the linkage as the outer two carbs were way out of sink, makes me wonder if this was part of the reason for the strip down???? And I'm not sure about the frame damage maybe dropped? As she measured up straight so no major crash etc, more later

piston carbs (up to 1980 models) and CV carbs (1981-on) do not simply swap. The intakes at the cylinder heads have different spacing. I think throttle cables are different, too.
Your spokes model seems a 1980, your mag wheel bike looks like a 1981 Custom.
The original steering stop is weak and easily gets damaged in a crash. I also had to do this welding.
Unfortunately fork and frame are weak and susceptible, too. On the other hand this means you have a realistic chance to get these straight again, too.

Just looked at your link, ouch did it hurt much. Luckily your OK. And your spot on with the years. The spoke wheel bike is a UK w reg prefix which is 1980 and the mag bike

The throttle cable for the spoke bike has arrived and the battery just waiting to get the parts for the oil filter and I'll be back on it, I really enjoy working on these bikes they have a solid well thought out feel to them
