New here, 79 CB 650

Postby thrutheframe » Fri Nov 11, 2011 11:29 pm

I'm new here but I've been on the SOHC4 forum for awhile. The pic is my 79 CB650. I started working on it since February of this year. I bought it off of Craiglslist in December of 2010 for $600.00. I have pretty much rebuilt the chassis and part of the electrical system Here's a list of the things I have repaired or replaced:

Swing arm, new bronze bushings, new shock bushings, painted
New rear tire, Dunlop 404
New Progressive shocks
Replaced torn seat with near perfect seat from eBay
Rebuilt and painted front brake master cylinder
Rebuilt and painted front brake caliper
Stripped and painted clutch lever
New stainless steel brakeline
New Mac 4-1 exhaust
Rebuilt front forks, seals, wipers, progressive springs, painted the bottom fork tubes
New sprockets front and rear
New 530 o-ring chain
Removed factory airbox, new pod filters
Replaced stock handlebars with super bike bars
Replaced clutch cable wit one from a CB360 (correct length by luck)
Shortened throttle cables (molten lead will burn you BTW)
New oil pan (leaky stripped drain plug)
New clutch lever seal
Oil and filter change
New CDI Ignoters
New alternator rotor
Refurbed wire harness, replaced most of the connectors
Replaced goofy vetter headlight bucket w/ '72 CB750 headligh bucket and complete trim package
New headlight ears (Parts N' More)
Shortened stock side covers by 2"
Painted battery box
New handlebar grips
Bar end mirrors

I have about 100 hours of work and 100 hours of just sitting and staring at it. I'm sure there are things that I've left off. One notable thing that I forgot to get was the recky/reg combo, (yes stilll no charging system) Riding season is over and I only really got a few miles in on this bike (luckily I have other bikes). I plan to keep pushing ahead on this bike through the coming winter.

Sorry, it took a couple of minutes because the file was too large.

Thanks you sir... I plan to paint the tank flat aluminum metallic with a black stripe on the raised portion. The side cover you see is rattle can semi gloss ala rustoleum. I'm undecided about the color on those, most likely flat aluminum metallic as well. You can see more about my build at:

So what is missing in the list then is: re-jetted carbs

Interesting to know.

Really? How did you find out.
BTW, molten tin, too...

They may still work even if the black (toxic) stuff did melt out. One may refill with JBWeld or so.

Here you may get some money for your old one.

Thanks volker, it's truly a labor of love for me. I just plain get joy out of taking something beat and neglected and turning it into something new and shiny. Comments to your comments are included below.

Yes... I actually replaced the carbs with a set PD26's that I bought from a memeber on the SOHC4 forum. They have 120 mains, the slow jets were replaced but I cant remember the size. The bike runs pretty well but honestly the charging system issue has prevented me from really testing the bike across the entire range of speed.

I have 2 CB 360T's, had a new NOS cable lying around and figured the smaller bike might be the correct length.

According to the 79 cb650 carb jetting question thread and provided that these PD26 are close to the PD50/PD51 (visually I'd said these are PD50), this main jetting may already be quite all right for pods.

Heres another shot that I got right before I brought the bike down to street level for the first time. I think she looks really anxious to get going in this pic.

Volker, you mentioned some different carb models and sub models, here is a decent shot of the right hand side of my carbs.

Yes, great pictures.
Can't read the number on the carb. Should be stamped in on that step just below the PD. So what did they write there?

In any case these carbs just look like '79 stock carbs should look like. If you did not mention that you mounted others, I'd assume these are stock.
