'79 home made cafe seat and bobber plate

Postby andrewnorman » Thu Apr 12, 2012 1:51 pm

Here are some recent pics of my 79 cb650. First off i apologize too everyone who hates messing with classics but in order to learn you have to start somewhere and i started with a $1500 well running toy. im not worried about cutting the frame because nothing is compatible with this darn 79 frame anyway. This is my first attempt at customizing a bike as well as working with a welder and metal work. I still need to adjust it to cover the end of the frame and make it fit nice and snug.

I made a skeleton out of angle iron and a square steel bar i purchased at home depot. cut some sheet metal and surprisingly turned out to be very easy, especially the cowl.

the bobber plate was very simple, just some sheet metal and a $12 tail light welded together.

I also relocated my start button to the side of my frame but you cant see it in the pics.
Let me know what you think..

Not bad for the first try.
As the sheet metal does not cover the cut frame tube ends you'll need a solution there or consider to just use a longer sheet metal.

I agree. i will also have the seat skeleton wider than the frame next time so it sits cleaner. I painted the cut frame last night so its a little less noticeable now.

Im open to any ideas on where to take it from here.

Also, any ideas on color schemes or if i should keep original would be appreciated.
