'80 CB650 Bobber project
Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
Made some more progress this weekend. Worry not, the frame will be reinforced/triangulated in this area when I am done.

This mount position seems a very good choice.

Got some more done. Mocked up the swingarm with some cheap conduit. It's just a concept at this point but I really like the direction it's going.

Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
The quite long axle for the bottom shock mount might become a problem.
One should consider to reduce the gap by supports on the side tube inner sides.
Or make a rigid connection and then place the mount on it.
I could imagine that a second, shorter swingarm from a smaller bike instead of the two side tubes would look very professional. However space seems a bit limited for that.

Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
Volker,
The small piece of rod going through the lower shock eye is just for trial and error. I'm going to weld a full size piece of tubing in there with a proper mount to test the suspension compliance. Is that what you were referring to?
The green and blue sections support the shock. The red is simply an extension to look like it blends into the frame and give the illusion of a hard tail. Once I perfect the mounts I'll fabricate the yellow section over it, supporting the seat and hiding the gap between the red section and the main frame.

Yes, because this seems the most critical point of the construction.
A rigid tube there would generate a triangle together with the blue parts.
Guess the blue parts should not meet until they are welded to the tube around the swing arm axis. Should be really stable that way.

Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
Had to ditch the upper shock mount that took me hours to fab and install...shock was way too stiff in that configuration. This is still the trial and error/ mock up phase but, this is were I'm heading now.
Doesn't show everything but gives you an idea.
Got the rear 16" Harley rim laced up with Buchanan spokes then I took the wheels to CountlyLine Chopper to be trued and have the whitewall tires installed

Wheels look good. I like the darker red. I don't know what shock you're using, maybe one from a dual sport bike wouldn't be too stiff. I like the "hardtail" look to it. Looks like you're running a sporty tank. Are you modifying the tunnel to sit lower or going to run it high? Can't see well in the pic.
Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
I'm trying to get the tank top sit as low as possible b/c I don't like the high "frisco" look at all. I cut the tank mounts and moved them and that helped, but I couldn't get the rear of the tank any lower due to the width of the backbone.
The shock is from a Ninja 600. The ninja runs it mono without a linkage so I thought it would be ideal.
Thanks for the positive comments so far!

Finally got the rear suspension figured out. Mocking up the seat mounts next then pulling it all back apart to complete the welding. After that's done the next big project is making a battery tray under the swingarm.

Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
need bigger pictures. hard to see all the details. from what i can see though it looks good
Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
A few more pics..... I still need to clean up some of the welds, pull the engine (again, and again lol) and get to the backsides of some of the joints. I want to add some small gussets in places too.
From the top, gives you a good idea of how the shock mounts.

Been very busy with work and haven't spent as much time on the bike as I'd like, but I got the tail light built!

Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
Working on the fender.....
Got the seat mount done....
And fabbed up a battery box that I located under the swingarm...
Starting to really take shape.
