'80 CB650 Bobber project
Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
Works great! Rides well, runs good. only two issues. The first is that it's only getting about 30 mpg, though I'm not sure what it should be getting so....The second is that I have some cam chain slap when coming off the throttle so I'm trying to get that fixed now. other than that I love it!

Really unique result!
30mpg? Check out if it runs on all four at all.
Too loose cam chain typically is a quite similar but somewhat louder sound like valve ticking.
So I doubt that cam chain slack is something that can be heard on releasing the throttle. Unless maybe the tensioner may not be blocked by the rear bolt any more.

Thanks!
Got two full tanks through it now and its getting about 40 mpg. Which with the larger rejet and moving up the needles I expect some loss in mpg. The only issue now is the noise. like I said it only happens when I'm off the throttle, coasting.. and it definitely sounds like something loose and slapping internally. It doesn't seem to make a difference if I pull the clutch in either. I'm having too much fun riding it right now, but if I can't figure it out I'll tear back into it as soon as it gets cold again.

40 is ok if you riding it hard. They are capable of 55 without to much trouble.
addressed your slapping in another thread.

Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
found it! Drive chain hitting the case saver under the sprocket cover. I'm running a larger front sprocket so I had to do some cutting and welding but its all good now. Thanks!

Could you post the pics of the tank fabrication you did please?
Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
I cut the front mounts on the Harley Sportster tank off and moved them down on the tank from where they originally were.
They line up with the stock hole in the frame now. I just had to grind the area down a little..
In the back I cut the tabs off and moved them outboard due to the width of the CBs backbone
Then I welded on some bolts that stick out horizontally from the frame to grab the rear tabs
I used rubber isolators between the mounts and bolts/nuts.

Awesome! Thank you very much. Ill soon have a build thread going. I like the direction you went with yours.

Nice bike! I plan to do the same with my 81 cb650...I'm curious on how to turn into hartail with the suspension and shocks.
Re: '80 CB650 Bobber project
Update. Still no issues with this build, rides great and I always get into conversations about it where ever I go. The electronics mounted low in front of the rear tire is a non-issue. I've ridden it in all kinds of weather, and been caught in soaking rains with no problems what so ever. Love my Honda!
