This is how it looked when I picked it us last week. Needs some love here and there, its my first restore and first cb. I had a sport bike (1999 Yamaha YZF600r) prior to this one I hope to enjoy it as much as I did my sport bike.

Welcome here!
Not complete, but what is there looks all right.
Guess you won't like the chassis if you are used to sports bikes. Modern tires will make some improvement.
You'll need 79 or 80 carbs (PD50/PD51), 81-on CV carbs (VA44/VB44) will not fit the 79 cylinder head.

Re: '79 cb650
I see u did make it over here. I have a grab bar if you are interested in it.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
Re: '79 cb650
I have a box of parts including the carbs and I believe a rear grab bar as well. I also got the big vetter front and the storage box for the back if anyone is interested in buying those, I wont be needing them.
I am looking for a good deal on a carb seal rebuild kit that has everything I need in it, I keep finding ones for the 80's models will thos work as well?

Re: '79 cb650
Have a look beneath the circular cover fixed with two bolts at the outer left carb (#1) just above the floater bowl.
There might be or not be a vacuum diaphragm. Most carb kits don't contain them. However it is possible to block the passages and just leave them out (as Honda did for the later models, too).

I have been looking at tires and there are a lot available for the bike, cruser tires and sport touring, when you say more modern tires would you go sport touring? that is the direction I lean just because I think they look better. I looked at the Bridgestone BT-45V, S11 spitfire, and the kenda K657. any thoughts?
Re: '79 cb650
BT45 is something good in principle, however they still seem to have occasional production quality problems. So have a close look what you get and if the tire shows bumps or so refuse to take it!
I just wanted to mention that one should not get the tire style that was already on the market when the bike was new.
Bad stuff! But still on the market and due to low production numbers even not cheap.

Re: '79 cb650
I think I like the s11 spitfires so far. I dont want to end up sending tires back.
Re: '79 cb650
I'm running the spitfires on my project. I only have the rear tire mounted right now but at least you could see what it looks like on a comstar.
Re: '79 cb650
It looks good. Once I get it running I think I will got with them since my current tires are pretty trashed right now. How about that triangle plate on that bike? how did you make that?

I'm assuming you're talking about the number plate on the XS400 I posted in my 650 build? It's just sheet metal with slight bends to fit the contour of the frame. If I were to do it again, I would fit it within the frame tubes instead of on top of them. Should be easy to weld a couple tabs to the frame or use some sort of clamp (electrical wiring clamps would work great I bet since they're offset).
Re: '79 cb650
Yeah the XS400. Cool I think I will try to do something like that with mine eventually. Good tip on the clamps thanks.

Re: '79 cb650
Here is what the carbs look like. Thought I had a pic of the float bowls but they just looked like they had the residue from dried up gas, pulled one of the jets and it looked good no gunk or clogged ports.

Re: '79 cb650
Looks like a long time since these bolts were opened last time. Could become a tough job.
Some idle screws (heads) seem missing.
