head leaks and shifter seal

Postby my79650 » Sat May 12, 2012 10:49 am

Got new OEM pucks and head o rings; was $42; had to go through dealer as my aftermarket shop was having problems with suppliers. Started the work and got the seal replaced on the shifter; had to stop as it took to raining here; have a few pics.

Used some degreaser down by the oil pump and shifter rod; used a small screwdriver to remove the old seal; may have been original; been dripping for awhile pretty badly on the side stand,

Few pics of the "typical head leaks". A huge mess on the front and back of the head between #2 and #3; pucks get replaced because of that.

#1 is always the worse mess due to side stand use.

Going to put the exhaust that was on this when i got it. My chrome head pipes and mufflers are getting rusty. Nothing rotted through yet, i want to clean them up before they go bad.

Not the torque wrench i wanted; strapped for cash; set all the 12mm head bolts at 20 lbs. Cleaned up the gasket area and the head as best as i could. Smeared a thin coat of grease on the cylinder base for the head gasket. Slowly getting this done as the weather permits. Next project for me is a 10 by 16 shed; tired of waiting on good weather to do any repairs or routine maintenance.

All back together and running; exhaust leak at the header pipes; the base gasket at the crankcase for the cylinder sleeves was good; no leaks there. Cleaned out as much of the dirt out from the front head bolts near the bottom before i pulled anything apart. Greased up all the bolts for the head and covers etc. Fix the exhaust leaks after work and add a few more photos.

Yes, that's exactly the torque wrench you would not want there!
Hope you got it together anyway without stripping a thread.

Lock tight? Better safe than sorry. Pipes: the one piece mufflers/pipe combos that was on this machine i couldn't use again; something got bent and i couldn't get them to seal up at the head. Need to degrease the engine again and make sure i have no more leaks, no more dripping underneath when parked.

Do i use a small dremel tool with a soft stone to get rid of that? I want to get these powder coated this winter. Another question; should have done another thread: screw for the stock bullet type front brake light switch the head broke off. real hard steel as i tried to drill it out, no luck; broke my smallest drill bit. Do i have to pull the m/c off the bike and use a drill press? Btw: i used my 3/8" ratchet to snug down all the head bolts then i used that torque wrench, as far as i can tell i didn't strip any.

I would try fuel oil and a toothbrush for minor rust on the chromed parts.

No idea about the brake light switch for now, will try to have a look.

OK; will give it a go with a toothbrush and oil, i have another stock 79 m/c that will fit the bullet brake light switch. It's seized up. but the screw is out of it. I may pick up a set of the proper pliers to remove the locking clip; and clean up the spare and swap over the plunger kit. Just an idea.

Had a look at that screw. Really tough as the drill will loose its guide from the switch side after some mm. I would remove all rubber and plastic and heat it up considerably with some oil and hope to turn it out then somehow.
