My new-to-me CB650Z ....

Postby M40Man » Sun Oct 12, 2008 12:32 pm

Greetings fellow CB650 types, new member here

Having once had a CB650Z brand new, many moons ago, what happens but my older brother buys one a while ago :D .
He abuses her (well, not really - but just doesn't care for her as well as I would!) so I bought her off him.

Here she is, as I do a few jobs to get her back on the road:

Leaking fork seals are not her only problems - but I hope to get her back on the road quite soon :) .

Welcome here! :D
Good luck for getting her together! Looks like you are a supporter of the belt and suspenders technique. But I see that the usual way won't work with that exhaust.

Thanks for the welcome, folks. Mighty chilly here at the moment & the dark evenings mean I haven't got as much done as I should have done.

She's out of the shed now, making room for one of my other steeds - but I have:
Completed the fork seals.
Done the tappets.
Put a replacement horn on her.
Replaced the tired old choke cable.
Balanced the carbs.

Fitted new plugs & air filter & done an oil & oil filter change.

She's running quite nicely, though will only tick over a little on the high side (about 1600rpm) so what she really needs is a good ride out on the open road  . Got to wait for an MOT inspection 1st though, and to fix the headlight & indicators

Won't be long, though. I feel I've yet to contribute much to this great site, but once I'm doing less fettling, I'll have more time. (Unless I'm out riding her, of course  .

Martin.

Yes, that will often solve some minor running problems after standing for a while. Seems like you did good progress at the important things. I am optimistic that it will just run fine. If not done already, also have a look into the tank before you seriously start riding.

Unlike the day I got it my bike now idles around 990- 1000rpm quite nicely.
The carbs are very prone to getting clogged after long time setting and rust in the tank is also a large problem along with rust getting in to the fuel shutoff valve and the fuel petcock.
have you tried to turn the idle down ?
and are you sure you don't have the choke out of adjustment? it can cause the bike to idle to high.
if it runs rough and won't run at less that the 1600 rpm the ride along with some carb cleaner could do a world of good for the bike they all need a good blowing out now and then.

I think the choke is good, Arcangel. Took her out on the road in atrocious wind & rain for the first ride today. (I Was taking her for her MOT test!). Pleased to say she passed - no problems.

Was a bit stuttery, not too bad though. I didn't go above 50mph though - the conditions didn't allow it. She handled the flooded backroads fine though :D . If it's drier tomorrow I'll take her some beans & blow the cobwebs away. I'll see how she runs then, & tinker a bit more if need be.

Not a pristine example, but I think she's quite pretty now:

Glad to here.
My bike doesn't do well in wet weather at all , I think it is time to replace the tires
they must be getting a little hard they don't seam to grip very well at all.
I only takes a little and the rear wheel starts slipping on 1-3 gears so gess I need to spring for the new tires.

Riding with changing loads and revs often improves the engine running characteristics significantly. But I guess it is not the season for that now. I remember I got a completely different engine after the first extended a bit faster turn after winter when I still did ride it through the complete year.
Looks good, your headlight seems to be directed somewhat to the sky?

Hi all, another new member here.

I have just purchased the bike shown in this link from member 'M40MAN' and he told me about this forum.

Martin did lots of work to her and now she runs great, just need a few things to get her to my liking and i'll be really happy.

Regards

Took a quick video of the CB today, just before going for a ride.
