I recently bought this magnificent bike.
I have been riding bikes since I was a kid but this is my actually first owned bike ever, registered under my name and bought out of my pockets.
I felt immediately in love with it.
I believe i bought myself a great piece of history.
Cheers to all CB650 riders!!!

Re: My new 1982 Honda CB650
The bike has 26000 miles and it's been very well taken care of in the past.
All i had to do after i got it was to replace the battery and front and back tires.
When my next couple of paychecks are going to come in i want to make a few modifications, like replacing exhausts and gas tank.
I have a technical question for you guys:
The bike runs great now but the only problem is the steering:
the stem bearings need to be replaced, the steering is not fluid, you can feel it get kind of stuck when it reaches the center. It affects me when i ride at very low speed but it doesn't at all at higher speed... I do wanted to get it fixed, but the problem is $$$
A shop asked me $250 to get the job done!
What do you guys think, is it a reasonable price or should i keep looking around?
I know that is not an easy fix and i do not have the tools and knowledge to get it done, but is it possible to find someone who will ask for less money?

It does not take many tools, and it is a fairly easy process. It is even easier if you put in the tapered steering stem bearings. I didn't have to buy tools to do it, but the bearings cost me $32 shipped, and they can be replaced in an afternoon. The http://cosky0.tripod.com/id12.html"manual" shows how to do it. I think $250 is way too high, but I haven't gone to a shop for any work either to see what rates would be.
If you share where you live, there may be someone near you that would be willing to help you do the work.

Re: My new 1982 Honda CB650
Looks good, better then when I got mine. I have the same issue with the steering bearing. It feels like there's a detent when the bars are at center. Makes slow speed maneuvers a little difficult. I'd like to hear how you make out with it, I'm going to do mine soon. I have to find the tapered ones. Good luck with it. I don't know if there is an issue with the exhaust or you just want it louder, if it's the second, you can remove the covers at the end of the mufflers. Just drill out the rivets & work it out. It has a pipe that goes into the muffler chamber. May be a little too loud for you, but you can return it to stock if wanted, and it's free.

I would be interested in your exhaust if you are going to replace it. I think it would fit my 79.

that thing is clean!!!!
the steering head bearings are no sweat, and you'll get to know lots of different parts of the bike by getting to them, which you will have to learn someday...taking care of these bikes is part of the joy, and you'd go broke if you took it to someone to fix all the time.
enjoy!!!

Re: My new 1982 Honda CB650
Thank for the good advices!
There is actually another issue that someone here might me able to help me out with,
it is the front brake that works just fine, but it produces a very annoying whistle.
I heard there is a spray that you can apply to the brake pads. Have you heard about it?
Cheers

Re: My new 1982 Honda CB650
Is this a permanent noise or only when you brake?
One may clean out the rear of the brake pads. Not sure for the 1982, but there are metal sheets at the rear of the brake pads that should avoid squeak.
If putting/spraying something on the brake pads, this is always and only the rear side!

It squeaks only when i brake
Re: My new 1982 Honda CB650
Try lubricating the glider bolts and (very spare) the rear side of the brake pads.
