My 1982 Cb650 Nighthawk
My 1982 Cb650 Nighthawk
Here she is. Only 8k miles, and the only blight on her is the little dent the chuckleheads at the gas station put on the tank when I brought it in to drain it. All original, including the TIRES, but I am having them swapped out now for a set of Pirelli Sport Demons...not so comfortable riding around on 26 year old rubber! even the grips are NOS. She runs well, but I have been developing a bit of an oil leak that manifests itself on the cooling fins, and the tank is a gunked out mess of old kreem and rust. My winter projects will be a new POR 15 coating for the tank and hunting down the *#!@&*&$ oil leak. Any ideas? I live in sugar hill in Manhattan so sadly the only twisties she sees are on Riverside Drive.
Re: My 1982 Cb650 Nighthawk
Nice!!! Someday I will own one. Always liked the custom replacement.
Oil leak is the O rings on each end of the head. Common problem. I've been using stop leak on mine and it has helped.

Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
Re: My 1982 Cb650 Nighthawk
That right thar is my dream machine. Love the styling, and it kept the SOHC4. My future bike will be an '82 Nighthawk.
Re: My 1982 Cb650 Nighthawk
Thanks. Wasn't an expensive bike at all. I paid $650 for it not running, but it was in really nice shape...cosmetically at least. Had the carbs rebuilt for another $700 and she has been running pretty well so far, good acceleration, and never hesitates or misfires after she's been warmed up... I have noticed some "false neutrals" but I am pretty sure this is due more to my lack of riding experience and familiarity with the bike (this is my first bike ever) rather than a problem with the clutch.
I've managed to take off the tank, replace an inline fuel filter, and tear apart the instrument panel/headlight to remove the ignition switch..so I am not a total noob, and haven't found the Clymer too difficult to follow...but how hard is it to remove the head and replace the O rings? Do I need any special tools? Also, can I get the O rings from Bike Bandit or someplace like that?

Welcome here!
Good idea to replace the old tires,I'd guess especially the rear one would block immediately when you touch the brake.
The two (5x2.5mm) O-Rings can be changed with the engine in the frame. However the threads are quite susceptible and it is strongly recommended to get a small enough torque wrench. There seem only few CB 650's without stripped threads at the head cover, but also the head bolts are susceptible. Clean the head bolts as long as the engine is closed, e.g. with a high pressure cleaner as usually there is much sand at the inner ones which will cause fitting problems for the socket and which also can fall into the threads at the bottom of the cylinder as soon as you pull out the head bolts.
I found several additional neutrals so don't worry about them. But don't use them as neutral when rolling, the involved surfaces might not be lubricated sufficiently and a safe separation from gears is not granted.

Nice Bike dude. Nighthawk's are cool. My next bike would be that one.
Also for O ring get the torque wrench and you could get the rings from bikebandit.com, oldbikebarn.com or partsnmore.com.
I have used all three websites and the service is decent.

I always liked the 2 tone blue 81 customs also. Finnaly got one and some ahole previous owner musta used a putty knife to take of the helmet warning sticker so now it has a big rust spot.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

My sticker on the tank has a chip out of it as well and I got a new one only to find that they are white and clear, so the chip will still show if I don't fix it.
The sticker looked like it was brown with white writing but no such luck.

Re: My 1982 Cb650 Nighthawk
I wish mine was just a chip. Its the size of the sticker and rusted.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
Re: My 1982 Cb650 Nighthawk
that's still not to bad, can't you just bondo the square sand touch up paint the square and put the sticker over the touch up spot?
or is it way to big to cover with the sticker?
Ya I guess it can't be that simple.
I only have to remove the old sticker fill the chip with bondo sand touch up paint and put on new sticker. even if the paint is not a perfect match the sticker will help hide it.

Re: My 1982 Cb650 Nighthawk
Mine will have to be a semi major job. The rest of the tank is perfect so dont eant to start from "scratch". Want to get a tank and side covers for the 360 ready and paint them the same color.

Re: My 1982 Cb650 Nighthawk
Mine has a few minor scratches here and there and 7 or so tiny chips in various places so painting the entire thing would be in order but just now I am to broke for that.
