That's cause I cut them! Praise the lowered!
Re: My 81 650 C bratstyle
looking sweet man!
did you also cut the back of the frame where the back fender bolted on and weld that rounded piece in?
and where did you get that fork brace?

Re: My 81 650 C bratstyle
Yeah, cut about 3" behind the shock mounts.Weld a brace in before you try this at home kids! The fork brace is what you get when you drill the rivets out of an 81 CB650 standard fender and throw the sheet metal away. Thanks for the positive, and negative feedback. This is my first bike build, bound to screw somthing up!

Looks good man! I like the red. Like the lowering more. How much did cut out of the front forks? Just the springs, or the tubes too?
Re: My 81 650 C bratstyle
I Just picked up a 1980 650C that I want to brat. I am really liking how you did the seat on this. Just a few questions, did you use the stock seat base and just cut it down to be not so wide and bulky? If not, how did you make your seat base and how do you bolt it on to the frame? Thanks, and good job so far!
Re: My 81 650 C bratstyle
Thanks for the kind words guys,Nitro, I used the springs from an cb650 custom they're longer and progresively (sp?) wound spring. I figured about how much I wanted to lower the front, I decided on 2.75". I cut 2.5 " off the soft side of the spring. The end w/ fewer coils, then flattend the end I just cut so it will seat on the dampener. Then I made a spacer out of 1" mild steel tube to make up the dfference between the dapener rod and the dampener spring.(The short spring.) Dotheton.com is an excellent source for homebrew mods. (Just try not to be easily offened, good people who sometimes get a little course.)
Re: My 81 650 C bratstyle
Sorry Volt I meant to get to your question last night, but the connection went bad. Anyway,I used the white plastic they use in food processing plants, and in the backs of semi truck trailers for my seat base. I'm not sure what it's called, all I know is that it's food grade.(Not that it's important.)The stuff I used is about 3/8 inch thick,I cut it to shape, then used a heat gun to form it around various curves. I mounted it using the brace I put in [u]BEFORE[u]I cut the rear seat brace.I'll try to post some pics.
Re: My 81 650 C bratstyle
Thanks Ray, I actually found some of your posts on the ton. Im going to try to make a similar seat for my 1980. Thanks for posting up the pics Again. I also like the slammed forks, but I'm a bigger guy and the bike already feels on the small side. I might have some more questions down the road.
Re: My 81 650 C bratstyle
looks great! I really like the lowered look in the front. Wish I knew someone who could weld a support in for me if I choose to go with a solo seat.

Sure, I just wanted to give a slight hint that they may be that short that the fork may hit the triple tree in case of a tough bump at the road.

Re: My 81 650 C bratstyle
That's why I cut the soft end of the progressive spings, and added 20w fork oil.
Re: My 81 650 C bratstyle
I see.
Should be safe but I would think you have a quite tough fork response now.

Re: My 81 650 C bratstyle
I have a few questions about your lowering. Did you keep the air system or cap that off? Also looks like you only have 1 brake caliper vs. the dual that the customs have. If that is the case how does it handle and how is the braking? I was told the CB550 forks would work with a complete swap but you lose a brake caliper. I was thinking about getting a set up 550 forks and swapping out all hardware with the 650 for legs so I can keep the dual shocks and same mounting for the tire. Volker - what are your thoughts on that to keep quality handling?
