Repainted 81 Custom

Postby DonSoares » Thu Jul 05, 2012 1:34 pm

Hey hey

Repainted my 81 custom this past weekend. It used to be rattle can medium blue, pretty ugly with overspray everywhere. Took off the panels and tank, cleaned and sanded flat, sprayed with duplicolor can high build primer/filler, sanded flat with 400, washed with detergent, then sprayed duplicolor perfect match honda burgundy then high gloss clear. used the entire can of all three. let dry overnight and a day in the sun and here's the result. Looks a bit dark because of the shade, but it's very glossy and shiny, the metallic looks nice in the sun.

Anything is possible with good prep!

Really great result! :D
I assume this was not the first time you did something like that?

Nope, I worked in a body shop for a few years and have painted a bunch of cars. Always with a gun though, never used cans, but very happy with the results!

Sweet! Be careful gassing her up. Duplicolor clear not really too tough when it comes to gas drippage.

Yea it's an oil cooler, though it came on the bike, don't know anything more about it.

And yea, even though it's been days in the sun the duplicolor still feels a bit tacky. I made sure no gas is going to drip on there!

I'm wondering whether it's worth trying to compound and wax it, but im worried the compound will lift or burn through the clear coat since it's spray can. Anyone done that before?

Am I reading correctly that you did all this in basically one day? I am repainting mine right now. I was not happy with the green color or the finish (it was just sprayed on in layers with no sanding). I'm going with black this time. What I have done so far is:

-Removed all the old finish down to the bare metal (bare plastic for the side panels)
-coated with Rustoleum automotive primer, wet sanded with 400 grit, and recoated.
-Applied a light layer of Rustoleum black and let dry overnight.
-wet sanded with 600 grit, washed it down with detergent, and let dry.
-Applied another coat of paint and repeat the process.

I am about 2 days into the process right now. I'm attaching two pictures of the tank as it is now, and a picture of a finished Suzuki tank I did in red. I think I did about 4 coats on the Suzuki tank.

I need some advice on applying clear coat. Should I sand in between coats of clear?

I never sand inbetween coats. Some people may, i'm not sure either way, but I never do. I've always been taught that you spray your coats close together so they bond to each other rather than spraying coats over dry surface. like coat....wait 20 minutes....coat...wait 20 minutes...etc.

Same for clear. You finish ur color coat and as long as there aren't any bad runs or bugs or anything, you spray ur clear right away, same process, until finished. This way all the coats bond together into one thick, hard coat, rather than layers, but that's just how I do it.

I'm not sure what would happen if you spray clear over that sanded finish...my gut is that it would still look sanded, but i'm not 100% sure.

yes your final coat of black do not sand. leave it alone. and do not sand in between coats of clear. do 3 to 4 coats of clear then let it dry for at least 24 hours. then you can go back with say 1500 grit and wet sand it out. then if you want you can go to 2000 grit and wet sand it out with that. after your done with that you will wanna get some good meguairs wax and polish it out. you will end up with a very nice smooth finish with no orange peel.
