My New 81' CB650C

Postby unleashed » Mon Jul 09, 2012 2:19 pm

Hey all, Been reading alot here after buying my 81' CB650C. Seems like a great site for needed info & members with much knowledge willing to share what they know. I'm 45 & have been riding dirt bikes sence I was 10 & streetbikes sence I was 16 & currenty own a 84' Honda 250r ATC I rebuilt 2 years ago. I owned a 76' CB550 back in the late 80's & was 1 of my favorites.
So I bought this CB650C a few weeks ago for $1600 & know thats quite a bit more than the average but with the title he handed me $1500 in parts & labor reciepts from the last 5 years that he owned it. So with the $1500 he bought 2 new Dunlop tires, fork seals, rebuilt both front calipers, new front master cylinder/reservior, front pads & rear shoes, replaced head gasket & seals, cleaned, rebuilt, rejet & synced carbs, cleaned & lined fuel tank, new choke cable, new battery, starter, new 4 into 2 mufflers, case saver, new chain & sprockets(-2 teeth on rear), K&N air filter, oil & filter change & tune-up. I may have left something out but you can kinda get the picture. PO had built it to keep but in the 5 years he owned it had only put 700 miles on it & seeing how he never rode it decided to sell to help finance the building of a jeep he was doing. He was asking $2000 but took $1600. The bike needs nothing(needed a horn & found 1 on CL), starts, idles & runs like a dream. I am the 3rd owner & bike has 19,000 miles but I am very happy with it & IMO worth every dime I paid. :D
Along with the bike came a cover, battery tender & a Clymer manual.

Welcome here! :D

Looks really good, rider seat is in fact lowered. Sounds like a lot of work was already done.
Nevertheless I would have wanted a really nice 4-4 exhaust for that money.

BTW: interesting picture filename.

Thanks for the postings, just a bit of history on the bike. I bought it off Dave(PO) a few months ago who bought it off the original owner in 2006. It had been sitting untouched in a garage for 15 years & although it looked clean it was in need of much work. Tires were dry rotted, carbs all gummed up, front brakes locked up, leaking oil, dead battery & so on... Dave took it into a local shop & had them go over the entire bike & fix or replace everything it needed. Well the shop ended up handing him a $1532.00 bill! Well Dave didnt ride it much & in 5 years only put 700 miles on it. He road it every year but only road around town in good, dry weather so here in Oregon thats like June & July.lol
He put all that money into it thinking he was going to own it for awhile & ride it more often than he did but started to build a 4X4 Jeep & ran short of money to finish it so decided to sell the bike to finish the build. He had around $2300 in it so was asking $2000 but ended up taking my $1600 offer after 6 months of listing, showing & getting a few low ball offers in the $1000-$1200 range.
Anyway the bike is in like brand new condition & the only thing I needed to do was buy a $5 horn for it, I mean it needed NOTHING. I looked at a few bikes in the $1000-$1200 range & they all needed work so instead of buying a project I spent an extra $500 & bought a turn-key DREAM. :D

Yes, this is the problem with these old bikes. If you give them to a shop you get these bills even if there is no severe damage. At least in this case they seem to have done really good work. :)

However often enough you get poor work for a lot of money. This is why these bikes are only a cheap way of riding if you can handle most things yourself.

Anyway it sounds like you managed to get a bike in excellent condition here.
Have fun!

Volker- By the looks of the reciepts most all the usual problems/issues of these bikes were addressed by the PO. As I said it had no horn that was needed to pass Oregons bike inspection but found 1 on craigslist so was good to go & have already passed.
At this point there is absolutly nothing it needs & bike starts, idles & runs perfect with great power from idle to redline in all 5 gears. Came with a battery tender but have never plugged it in as it has a new battery & seems to be charging fine.
I do have a couple questions hopeing someone here can answer. I have the 4 into 2 exhaust & wondering if this Jardine (* link at bottom) 4 into 1 exhaust will work on my 81' CB650C. I asked the seller & he had no clue as to what year & size bikes it fit. Title & discripsion says 71'-81' CB500, CB550 & CB650. I have found a couple differant MAC 4 into 1 exhaust for an 81' CB650C but want something differant. I had a Kerker 4 into 1 exhaust on my 76' CB550 & loved it. I already know that I will need to rejet the carbs to take advantage of performance exhaust but due to the rain here in Oregon would like to keep the stock airbox with the K&N filter in it if posible even if I had to remove the plastic cap(seems restrictive) that holds the air filter tight & in place. I saw you can use large flat washers & the 3 bolts to hold the filter in place. If not would probably go with the 2 K&N dual inlet flange with chrome end cap filters(+ link at bottom) rather than 4 pods. So I ask will the Jardine work on my 81' CB650C & where if any would the bottleneck be? Thanks, Brett

I would question on if that exhaust is for the 500/550 or the 650. If it is for the 500's it wont fit the 650 as the engine is taller. If its for a 650 it will fit the 500 but hang down more than needed. Looks way diff than my jardine. If you want to keep the stock box go with the K&N replacement type. Its not what you posted.

Hey CB- I emailed Jardine & included that part number to see if they could tell me what year & model it fits, have not heard back yet. It is NOS & they no longer produce that pipe.
I'm running the K&N filter that fits inside the airbox(HA-7580) right now but wondered if it(air) would be to restricted that way & have to go with 2 of the ones that clamp to the carbs(KNN-RC-2362) to get the amount of air needed for carbs jet larger together with a better flowing exhaust. I was told the carbs were rejet when PO installed the 4 into 2 exhaust but not sure what size jets he used and/or if they large enough for the 4 into 1.
Kinda just looking at options right now as the bike runs great as it sits.

If you keep your current filter and change exhaust youll most likely be ok. If you change both most likely youll need to change jets. Its all a crap shoot as you dont know whats in there yet. The 81/82 CV carbs are more forgiving to changes too.
What will you be using the bike for mostly? Wouldnt put the baskets on a bike I planed on doing trips with.

Bought the bike as I own a 95' Ford F150 4X4 that gets 12 MPG & would like a bit of relief on the wallet when hoping around town. No real trips in mind but do want to get over to the coast & rip up & down HWY 101 for an adrenalin high at some point this summer. I do have a small trailer that I use to haul my 84' 250r 3-wheeler around in if the bed of my trucks full of camping gear so if wanted can pull the bike to the coast & ride from there.
The CB650C is geared low as PO replaced chain & sprockets & put a 38T on the rear as he only rode around town on it. Right now it runs 55 MPH at 5000 RPM in 5th gear(round/odd numbers) :)

I have that Jardine exhaust on my '78 550K. It is indeed intended to fit the 500/550 AND the 650. It sounds AMAZING, but is somewhat of a pain in the a... to fit.

The instructions that came with it:

Looks almost like a mac except for the individual pipe fitting.I wonder how it would fit on a 650 with the taller cyls. My jardine is 2 pieces and has equal length pipes. The collector is under the center of the engine.

I have a MAC on my other SOHC4 and the Jardine is nothing like it in looks, fit or sound. It sounds like a modern sports bike (in a good way).
My GF has an '85 FJ600 (awesome bike) and she often mistakes the '78 cranking up in the garage for her bike.

OK But the 3 macs I have look like whats on your 550. No matter how it installed. Maybe not as much upsweep but overall close.

The Jardine crosses all four pipes to the RH side of the oil filter.
Image

The pipes come together in a "square", so to speak.
Image

The MAC goes around the oil filter.
Image

It's collector is different as well.

I like the sound of both pipes, but they're very different sounding. If the bikes were parked next to each other, you wouldn't confuse the two exhausts in looks or sound.
