81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
Cool, are you going to mount your ignition switch somewhere else now?
Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
Yeah, I am going to mount it right under the right side of my seat.
I will then use the ignition switch mounts for a simplified speedo/tach combo.
Just trying to clean it up a bit.

A project bike is very revealing..... like for example..... I've come to realize that every time I project how long something will take, I need to just double it...... I'll then be about 1/2 way there!
Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
Finally got my frame back!!!
Got my new header too
I am ready to do my first assembly on this thing so that I can run my wiring, make my seat and custom battery box, set up my rear sets, and anything else that may need done along the way.
I figure that I have to put it completely back together before any of it gets painted. If I don't make sure it's all there and the way I want it, I am afraid that I will find myself redoing things later in the process than I desire.

Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
Wouldn't by chance be considering a custom "deer skin" seat would ya?
Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
I was wondering if anyone would notice that!!!
Deer skin seat...... Not a bad idea!:-)

Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
I have a question regarding the mounting of some rearsets on my bike.
I am picking these up this week, which is pretty exciting. I am now left wondering how I am going to mount them.........
My frame has had pretty much everything cut off of it and a tail hoop fabbed up and welded on... (the deer has been processed )
Does anyone have a good source or idea on how to mount the rearsets. I have seen a lot of different ideas online, but haven't found anything that is "bolt on" ready for a cb650 that I would want. I have a 4 into 1 exhaust that goes out the right side so I guess only that side would need to have a hanger....
Something like this would be perfect, but this is a yahama.
If I can not find something that is machined like the pic above, I will probably head in this direction.... (sorry for the grainy pic)
Any input is invited and appreciated.

bolt on kit for our cb650's. they also have some other options like changing the pegs to different ones. you have to buy the linkage separate to

Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
Here are a couple of pics of what I am up to.....
Working on my preliminary build..... Making sure that I have all of the pieces together before I tear it back down for paint
The tape is the base for my seat-pan... I will lay the glass down tonight.... Should be fun (I am actually looking forward to this)
Got my handlebar in yesterday.... Now I need to get my hand controls....
Carbs are taking a bath before they go on...

Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
I know that you are not going to attach that muffler mounting to the swing arm as it appears in the pic. Maybe some mounting tabs to bolt an aluminum nighthawk peg mount on. That would give you a good looking mounting bracket for the muffler.
If you still have that 4-2 exhaust. I would be interested in talking with you about it.

Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
Attaching the exhaust to the swing-arm won't work!!??!!
I was wondering if anybody would notice my sweet rig that I have there
I just got these in yesterday....
They are the rearset mounting brackets off of a R-1
I'll have a little grinding/polishing to do to make them exact, but I think that I got lucky on this... I was just guessing that they "might" work and took a chance..... It seems like they will be perfect!!!
I do have the exhaust. If you want to p/m me, we can go over the details. (I can send you some better pics, etc.)

I also got one step further in my prep for making my seat pan.....
I am fully prepped and bought the glass and resin yesterday.... I am looking forward to the next step quite a bit. Having the pan is going to make my bike feel so much more complete

Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
I would spray the bike with oil around the resin work area. Just to be sure to get off possible droplets easily and without damage.
Don't wipe resin droplets as long as they are wet (mess!) but let them harden and remove in one piece from the oily surface.

Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
Thanks for the tip! I have a feeling that this will save me from much frustration

Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
The fiberglass went pretty great!!
I put a good coat of wax down before the first coat of fiberglass.......
To my delight, it popped right off
I de-prepped my frame..... this thing just needs a little trimming and it fits like a glove!!!
Now I have to find an upholsterer..... I can't settle for anything less than perfection on the seat, so I guess that I have a little legwork to do

Re: 81 CB650, Where will it go from here?
If this should bee a single glass layer, do you think it is strong enough?
Of course it perfectly supported on the frame, however the inner area still is large.
