I have a 1979, my tank doesn't seem to have a rubber mount like the one pictured. Where is this supposed to be located? You're bike looks great by the way. If I wasn't dedicated to keeping mine looking stock, I would want mine to look like yours.

I really don't know about the 79 but on the 80 the tank rubber mounts are located on each side of the frame, there are two pipes that the bushings slip over. Just like on the bike on the picture (not a cb650).

Ah, I think I just assumed those were metal?
That's a nifty means to an end. Cool mod

Re: 1980 CB650z RC03 Café Racer (ish) project
I have received a few mails on my homepage regarding my drilled brake rotors and I thought I'd put it on this excellent forum to share.
Whether or not you should do it is completely up to you, I haven't had any problems on any bike I've done this mod.
Here is the template I used. It was not made by me, buy I rescaled & filled in the dots to suit my 650z.
I simply printed it so I got each halve on a paper, cut it in the middle with scissors and taped the two halves together. (I only have an A4 printer at home).
I taped it on the rotor and used a centre punch through the template to make good marks for the drill bit. Then I removed the template and used a cheap drill press with a GOOD new cobalt drill bit and cutting paste.
After that I used a chamfer bit to chamfer the edges slightly.
Took maybe an hour to do both rotors.

Re: 1980 CB650z RC03 Café Racer (ish) project
Got my bike put together and the new headlight with Acewell speedo installed. The fusebox went under the seat and all the wires taped up nicely.
I also had the time to rattlecan the tank and seat gloss black and take the bike for a 45 mile spin.
Oh, and I hate the fact that I must keep my bar end mirrors pointing up. If I have them pointing down my arms is in the way.

Nice result and quite different from the first picture at the start of this thread.
Good work!
You have a yellow headlight bulb?

Re: 1980 CB650z RC03 Café Racer (ish) project
Thanks... well there's still a ton of details to be taken care of but now it's a diamond in the rough and very much driveable/enjoyable.
Yes it a true french yellow bulb, it's a yellow glass bubble you put on top of the existing bulb making the light really yellow, not comparable to the available yellow bulbs. Now I can use my Osram Nightbreaker Plus and get a yellow color to it. It sure stands out in traffic and beeing seen while on a motorcycle is not a bad thing.

I'm now starting to go nuts on details. The todo list is increasing... I blame the weather, thunder and pouring rain!
Today I made a new A4 stainless front engine mount and I received my velocity stacks from Steel Dragon Performance.

My carbs were totally gummed up. I have two set of carbs, one with stock setup and one jetted/modified for pod/stacks and open exhaust.
I really wish there was a secret to it but unfortunately it's all about elbow grease.
They were photographed for reference then totally dismantled and laid out on a large table.
All parts were soaked in a degreaser for a day, then 60 min in an ultrasonic cleaner.
The bodies were also boiled in a citric acid/simple green solution.
The stock jets was cleaned with a copper wire from a speaker cable then popped into the ultasonic cleaner a couple of times.
Two of my stock slow jets was so badly gummed up I couldn't open them up with a wire so I soked them in carb cleaner placed them in the zink and put them on fire. After a few seconds the gunk dripped out of them and I could continue with the wire.
All parts was scrubbed with a non abrasive pad just to get the oxide off. The visible parts was scrubbed with a green 3M pad.
Some parts, like the lids got an extra polish with a 2 stage polishing kit available in most hardware stores making them shine like chrome.
The polished parts was clearcoated with "Por15 Glisten PC".
Everything was put together in exactly the same order. All external screws was replaced with stainless a4.
Bowl gaskets and float needles was replaced although I could probably have used the old ones.
All in all it took about 6 evenings to do a set, but then I'm VERY picky.
If you just want to make them work and look a bit better, well 2-3 evenings.

Re: 1980 CB650z RC03 Café Racer (ish) project
wow, that is a lot of work, I am not confident enough to completely disassemble my carbs. I dont have those resources either, Im just cleanning the jets with carb cleaner, a wire and the rest of the body with clr.
I was checking the rest of this thread, and i didnt find the size of the POD filters you have on your carbs. Could you please what size mm fit on your carbs?
Thanks

Re: 1980 CB650z RC03 Café Racer (ish) project
The outside diameter of my carb intakes are 47 mm.
I believe my pods are 45 mm in the opening and about 83 mm total length.
The rubber flange is quite flexible so mine fit the 47 mm intake just fine.

Velocity stacks installed and doesn't interfere with the choke!
I just added to my OCD-list that my whole engine will be brushed aluminum with brass details.
Couldn't resist taking it for a ride along the Swedish west coast for 3 hours.
