introducing my headache
introducing my headache
never really introduced myself yet. Thanks to all those who have replied to my post trying to help me out with my issues. My name is Aaron, located in TX. I have 1980 CB650C thats been quit the headache. Bike has pods with 120 mains and 42 slows jets. Bike wont go passed 50 mph in fifth gear for some mysterious reason. This is my first bike and first at learning how to work on these oldie but goodie machines. Learning as i go (kinda). Ive done all the basics but still cant solve the issue. really debating weather or not to take it to a shop.

Re: introducing my headache
YOu need the carbs thoroughly cleaned. I can help guide you or I can do the work for you. I've done hundreds of carbs and jsut rebuilt my CB650's. Jetting sounds right, but there must be some obstrctions.
Re: introducing my headache
Thanks, I have been through the carbs about three times. All i could really do is clean the main jets and set float height. Kinda intimidated to break them down totally, but even if i did i wouldnt know what to look for. Where are you located? Im in Spring TX about 20 min outa Houston

For what it's worth, that does not seem to be a CB650C, but a standard CB650.

Re: introducing my headache
I wish it was a standard, as i would love to make it into a cafe racer. But unfortunately its a custom model. I think because its on its center stand, its playing with your eyes. Since i dont have a cafe racer frame, once i get it running properly. Im gonna go for the bratstyle/bobber look.
Re: introducing my headache
I want it to look something like this, if i ever get her running right. With invisible handle bars. It was hard to photoshop drag/clip ons on the bike.

Re: introducing my headache
1980 CB650C with '81 colors, and a standard headlight bucket
1980 CB650 standard model
The main differences between the 2:
4 into 1 exhaust vs. 2 into 1
forks 2 inches longer on custom
comstar wheels vs. spoke wheels
slightly different angle on handle bars
more chrome on the custom.
You can confirm by the tag on the neck. it will say CB650 for the standard model, CB650C for the custom model.
If yours is in fact a C, the PO swapped some standard parts onto it.

Re: introducing my headache
I might be wrong than. I thought the standards had the seat that was flat and flush with tank rather than having that cruiser style dip in frame. So maybe it is a standard
Re: introducing my headache
Only big diff in 80 is the wheels and exhaust headlite bucket and handlebars. All easily changed. Yes I would say yours is a standard.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

How do your plugs look like? Do all four look equal?
