So, finally had a chance to start doing some teardown on my 650 project today. Took off the exhaust, the headers and four mufflers alone feel like they weigh 60lbs haha. Took out the battery box, air box, and carb rack. Nothin too interesting here, just some typical teardown stuff. Sorry for the iphone pics, soon as I get into some more interesting stuff I will use the Nikon. Just wanted start my build thread and get some pics up. Thanks for looking.
Headers and mufflers were off in ten minutes.
No broken studs, bonus. Looks like the oil leak is coming from the head gasket? Or o-rings in the head?
Can see how the carbs would be a major PITA to take off if I didn't already remove the air box and battery box.
Carb rack out. Looks like fuel has been pissing out of somewhere on the carbs onto the tranny for quite a while.
Float bowls. The drain screws were super gummed up.
Cool shot of the carbs.
Stock air box has been repaired in 3 or 4 spots.
Thats all for today. -Jay

Oil leal looks higher, maybe one of the rubber coins on the head cover level.
The typical head level 5x2.5mm O-ring leak alone won't cause that much oil at the head level itself.

Thanks for the tip Volker.
Re: 1980 CB650C "The Pocket Knife"
Got some more work done on the bike last night. Removed all the cables, gauges, forks, and steering stem. I also did some work on the carbs removing the float bowls, floats, main jets, slow press in jets, and air screw jets. When I removed the air jets I did not seem to find any little washers, there was just the air screw jet, a spring, than a tiny little o-ring that looked like they were squished. Was the washer supposed to be in between the spring and the o-ring? Also, any recommendations for roller type steering stem bearing kits? Thanks. -Jay

Pulled the motor last night. Looks really dirty under the left side sprocket cover. Any ideas what seal is causing this?

Chain lube and road grime.

Chain lube and road grime.
The funny thing is: When i started my rebuild, the only engine parts that did NOT have surface corrosion were the parts coated with this grime. I cleaned it off and it was good as new.

Yes, if shifter axis and gear shaft seals look more or less dry, this is just from chain lube.
