My CB650
My CB650
Let me say few words about me. I bought CB650 in November2012, before that I was only driving Burgmans ( used one 250 and new 400K8) In 2011 i start rebuilding Vespa PX200 87' and then i was "cooked" to shift toward old bikes. My original plan was to purchase BMW R90, but when I get the opportunity to buy this baby I change my mind instantly. Bike is from 1983 and 32.000 km. My plan is to keep it in original shape and condition and because I live in Serbia I would need your advises and help how to get to the parts, so expect my questions about everything. In this moment I have only one picture, but I will shoot some more in Spring.
My first question is related to hard cold start with the choke. If I use a choke, it put too much petrol in carb's and the sparks become burned. Any idea what is going on. I all ready identify that rotor need to be replaced (thanks to this site)

Re: My CB650
Both the Vespa and the CB650 look great. More pics of both would be nice.
These inline 4 cylinders are cold blooded IMO. I have a SOHC CB650 and a DOHC CB900..... and I think the 900 is even more cold blooded than the 650.
Fouling the plugs could be caused by too much fuel..... choke is only intended to get the bike started and warmed briefly. Also, adjusting the choke from full choke after it is started to only partial choke is the norm. Running on choke for longer than necessary will cause the plugs to appear sooty. The carbs could also require adjustment so that the bike is not running excessively rich with fuel all the time.

Funny, I have both a CB650 and a CB900 also. I think the 650 is way more cold blooded than the 900. CB650 has a particular starting method I have to follow when it's cold. Two pumps of the throttle and turn the starter a few times. Two more pumps and it will fire, but then die. Two more pumps and it will usually catch. The 900 will start every time with one touch of the button.
BTW: Nice bikes, Mileaox. Welcome.

Re: My CB650
Welcome here!
Really pretty Z-model in great shape.
Which means "the sparks become burned"?
Really burned white or are they just black and wet and don't work any more?

Re: My CB650
You have the NGK DR8-ESL plugs? Or D8EA?
The CB650 has stock resistive caps (5kOhms) together with resistive plugs (again 5kOhms).
There was a time when NGK plugs really failed that way quite often. So how many plugs did it "eat" so far? Always all four or only certain cylinders?

Re: My CB650
Volker,
when I bought CB, it was with DR8ES-L. Previous owner told me that he try everything else from NGK but it was "eaten" the plugs (complete set) per few city drives. He also said that those ones are old but the best ones. As I had the problem with cold start I purchase 4pcs D8EA, first few starts went smoothly, but it seems that they are gone too.
Here is a picture of the DR8ES-L. In the meantime I bought DR8EIX (not installed yet) but I believe that first I need to find the cause why this is happening with the sparks and than to put the new ones.

Re: My CB650
Is that the normal front foot peg/gear shifter placement on the Z model? Just curious, I've not noticed that before.

Re: My CB650
Yes, all four look quite black and sooty.
Did you figure out your fuel consumption yet?
Check out your air filter: should be there, dry and in one piece.
"City drives" are of course no really good operation conditions for plugs.
If this is the only mode of operation, one may try a different heat range (hotter plugs). However this may cause severe overheat damage problems on a longer highway ride!
The Z-model has alumina plates for the footpegs and also the indirect shifter lever is stock.

Re: My CB650
Love the color scheme of the bike. It's so... late seventies/early eighties . Very nice overall!
