My 81 cb650 custom
My 81 cb650 custom
picked the 81 up for 500 bucks, needs some carb work and front fork seals. Other than that it doesn't seem to be in bad shape. Only has 9,600 miles. Can anyone tell me why the manual says to have the fork seals replaced by a dealer?

Nice....they say that just to get you to spend money at the shops for an easy job; can be done in a 1/2 hour taking your time; change the oil and since you got to clean your carburetors check your gas tank for dirt and install an inline fuel filter for more protection.

Welcome here!
Great bike, 500 looks like a really good deal!
Your forks may be air assist type, you should see valves on the fork plugs in this case. Seal replacement is a bit more difficult in this case. Nevertheless it can be done, you may find a descritption in the FORKS! thread.

Re: My 81 cb650 custom
Thanks for the info, guys. I stopped at my favorite cycle shop today and got a little info about the forks, since they are air assist. Sounds like it will be a simple job to do myself. The Carbs are a wreck... tinkeritis as I call it. the fuel line was plugged, the jets were the wrong size, the adjusters were not installed correctly and I have to broken floats. I,m carefully going through it now and I can't wait to ride it.
