Ide troubles with pd50 carbs

Postby my79650 » Sun Mar 31, 2013 2:48 pm

Got my motorcycle out for the season; past few days the idle has been erratic; fluctuation between 1500 and 2200rpm. If i set the idle screw down so it runs below 1500 it just stalls out like it ran out of gas, will run if i give the throttle quick twists. Out on the road it drives normally, but when i let off it screams past 2500 and sometimes just stalls out. I never vacuum synced these before and only had #1 carb pulled off when my fuel pipe o rings were leaking. Bench synced that 1 at the time. Now today when i got home from a drive i finally got it to idle down as per first sentence. It was sounding like it was sucking air by the way it was idling. Going to do a leak test with propane; will report back here. Also i have never had these carburetors tore down and cleaned since i got my 1st cb650 5 years ago. These carbs came from that machine and are on my daily driver. Other than that i got no other ideas unless the floats are sticking; repair kits are quite costly here in Canada. Any thoughts?

Some gunk may have clogged your pilot jet during the off season (or what you would call "off season." We have no such thing here in Florida  ). Try running some Seafoam through it first. About 1/3 of a bottle to a full tank of gas. That might clear it out. If not, you will need to take the carbs apart to clean out the jets.

Seafoam....ok...cleaning the carbs is easy; trying to get float bowl gaskets that's another story on its own!

FYI...i don't have a working choke anymore; removed the butterfly flaps; that has nothing to do with it; been running without choke for 3 years now; good accelerator pump. No popping when i let off the throttle so the air diaphrams are good; so it must be getting dirty. I do run 91 octane fuel; but like a lot of pumps they run off of one hose. So i probably end up getting too much ethanol gas in my system; which means crappy fuel; which means i got to tear these stock carbs apart. Just need to get float bowl gaskets before i even try anything.

That severe rpm changes are a typical hint to not running on all four permanently.
A partly clogged idle is already a good hint.

I never heard of popping at a stock CB650 so I guess this does not mean anything. Most PD carbs do not have air cutoffs at all (empty housings and channels not drilled through) and consequently also miss these diaphragms.

Float bowl gaskets are not necessarily dead.

I have new kits coming in this week; went to the local Honda dealership and they have a new aftermarket company out of Ontario Canada that has carb kits for $7/set....should be here Thursday. Will post the name of the company when i pick up my new kits as i forgot it when posting. Now i know that every one says that i can remove the pressed in jet to clean out the carbs, since i won't know what is in the kits til i get them can i reuse that jet? If i am gentle in removing it that is. Since i am going to tear the pd50s down i am going to the solder method to block the channels for the air diaphrams.

This link is for removing the jet in a cv carb set; mine are pd50 with the jet out in the open. No shoulder to tighten down the nut on the rod to keep it pulling straight. I never had these apart before, i guess it still has the stock press idle jet in from 1979.

Definitely plan on that. I want to salvage the slow jets in case the kits don't have them, won't know until Thursday or Friday.

Got my kits; Tour Max, part #48-1401. No jets; to be expected. I should have just ordered the jets as well. Before i get started; has anyone ever threaded out the press jet hole to take a threaded removeable slow jet? Just wanted to know if it was done before. I do not have a tap and die set anyway; was just curious.

I am not sure if that is the float bowl gasket for PD50. mine is PD50B and is definitely not like that.

I'm going to pull a float off and compare it, i can do this without opening the package. If they screwed up i am going to get them exchanged.

Yessir; wrong f!@#$%g kits; got #1carb cleaned; came apart quite easily; must have been done by a previous PO cause these was on my 1st cb650. Was able to save the float gaskets, pressed jet came out easily as well; cleaned out the tiny little holes in both jets with a wire tie for garbage bags; paper peeled right off and you have a wire that won't bore out those tiny annoying holes! I can finally say i lost my bike carb cherry:)
