Bad news.
Nevertheless I would measure rotor resistance between sliprings first. Shouls be 4-10Ohms.

Pulled the stator/rotor cover off, one of the brushes is nearly to the wear line. that explains my intermittent charging issue.

Rotor tested 2 ohms, time to replace it.

New rotor, new battery. shop loaned me the proper tool to remove the old one. 12.65v at idle. 14.67,68,69. Kept climbing at 4500rpm, so the regulator that was on the bike when 1 of the brushes wore down is toasted. I got 1 regulator/rectifier from the parts bike to try. If that doesn't work i picked up a ford regulator off a late 70s 3/4 ton truck from the junkyard for $5 to wire in. The rectifier side of the unit is working properly just don't trust the reg. side to level out.

Spare r/r not good; shot up over 15.60v and clombing at 4000rpm! I cleaned up the connector ends on the "original r/r for this bike" and the cables on the rectifier and wire harness. Now that one is going over 15 volts as well, damn it to hell!

I went back and cleaned up the connectors again; let everything cool; then hooked up the original r/r again and after 15 min. at 4000rpm it was holding at 14.6 volts.....maybe it was high before due to not being clean enough.

After a beer break i went and started it again. Set idle screw to 4000 rpm and the reading went up to 14.60/70 and held there. The r/r still is getting hot to the touch, and the spare is junk as it shoots up 15.65/70 volts when hooked up. It's not the rectifier side is it? If that was bad then i wouldn't get a decent reading on the meter, my concern is the heat, too hot so something in there is bad.

On page 16-9 of the manual linked below there is a test for the rectifier part of the RR.

You can put clear drain tubes on the float bowls and set fuel level with carbs on the bike.
Check Out BONSKITS post :"IN NEED OF HELP from Bretheren"
You will see A picture of clear fuel tubes and float bowel level.

Damn it; went to go for a night drive last nite; and twisted the throttle 4 times; kick and quit; same thing 3 times. Now i got to pull the rack again! Whe i set the floats the 1st time i had the pd50a's apart; i set them upside down on a level bench. From the base to the flat on top of thr float measured 1/2"(12.5mm). Was going by the weight the float put on the needle to make measurements til it got to mark. Must have been wrong cause after 2 days they pissed out when the petcock was turned on.
Pulled them again and readjusted; now not enough gas.....has float adjustments ever been a pain for anyone to get right? I don't have a small enough screwdriver to pull the floats on the bike and set them....trial and error i guess!

Wrong way is sitting carbs level upside down

The Correct Way is tilting the carbs and WHEN the bowl TANG TOUCHES then measure the height.

DON'T DEPRESS THE SPRING ON THE FLOAT NEEDLE!
just touch the needle, THEN measure it.

TOUCH not COMPRESS!

Yes it is a pain and very few get it right.

That is why I suggest to everyone that they put clear tubes on and SEE the level. You can do that with carbs mounted and it is much quicker than pulling the carbs out.

i'll have the carbs wore out from trying to get them right. Now i think i got ignition troubles. I readjusted the floats yesterday with them upside down at a 45 degree angle this time. There's a post on the SOHC forum about float levels for a 78 750 pd series carbs. It was setting them to the height of the slow jet. I did that and no more leaks; yersterday afternoon before i left for work it started up right away and ran on all 4 and never missed a beat. Now after i got home i went to start it and it only ran on 2 and quit; had to stop as i flooded it! Time to check the wires and everything else......but this acted the same way Saturday night when i went to try it but it was damp then; it rained tonight. Now in the 5 years i had 2 cb650s and they always started whether if was damp or a downpour. Reccomendations for new wires anybody?
