Graveyard resurrect: 82 650

Postby salzig hund » Wed Jun 05, 2013 3:10 pm

So I'm working my way slowly cleaning the carbs. I really haven't needed any harsh chems other than carb cleaner and a soak in pinesol. I took a brass wheel w the dremel to the body and used a bench brass wheel and they cleaned up great.

One small snag, aside from needing to replace the hoses, which I could use some advice ( I was just gonna size up replacements at parts store) I'm not sure which I rings need to be replaced. I got a kit from someone thru this forums but no clue to what goes where. I know the Float relief screws need em ( they got tore up on the turn out. And bowl #2 is rusted solid (anyone got an extra?)) but what about the realy small ones that came w the kit? I'll snap a pic of the new o rings. Do they go onto those connector bars (thin an fat)?!?

Anyways, here's some pics:

Finally, ive been able to put them back together. I hit a few snags and had to wait for parts and manufacture some others, but its finally coming together. Ill be getting into the engine hopefully this weekend. Wish me luck.

So I've managed to finish and reasseble the carb bank! Work and video games got in the way :). Only issue with the carbs is one of the float bowl screws had to be drilled out. I drilled all the way through and just bought a longer bolt with a locktight nut. Easy fix. Also, the breather "T" joints were retarded for me to find so I bought these plastic sections from a garden store. Super snug too. if you look between the 1 & 2 and the 3 & 4 carb you can see them.

With that finaly out of the way I began to clean the cylinder head cover and inspect the rocker assemblies. Firstly, the pads Are a bit marred, but I think theyll hold. Second, after a whole evening of cleaning an yada yada, I cracked the cover only using 5 lbs with a T wrench. The service Manual says 7-10 so fuck me I guess. I'll look on ebay for now, but in the mean time I'm going to address the cylinder head to keep busy :O, hang in there.

I've finally gotten to open the block. Pistons look ok, cylinders are within spec and will clean out the block and resemble soon. Still have the messy cylinder head and rusty valves. Ordering a hammer on styled valve remover. The clamp I bought off amazon was a piece of shit. Pictures later.

Valve job. Lots of buildup. I cleaned as much as I thought feasible. Took a brass Dremel and tons of berrymans. Lap job went pretty well. Need to redo a few of the valves but not bad. No wiggle either.

Man, it has been a while. Wife and I just recently moved last year... june... so a year ago, to Florida. I have a two car garage and I just got everything where it truly needs to be. Will post pics later. As far as the build goes:

My honing of the bores seemed to bring the ID to near wear limits. I found an outfit that makes custom rings and i sent specs to them seeing if larger rings would suffice or If I'll need over sized pistons.

Im in need of the 4th gear on the Main shaft due to a DECENT chip in the cogs. I mean, DECENT boys!

I have some play with one or two of the piston rods which I'll plastigauge hopefully this week just for reference purposes but I'll be looking to replace the journal bearings in the end.
