Hello, all! A couple weeks ago I picked up a nice running 1981 CB650 Custom. I rode a little as a kid, but this counts as my first motorcycle.
I've only been able to take a few rides so far (stupid crazy summer rains here in Virginia!) but the motorcycle so far has been wonderful. #4 misfires/backfires occasionally and seems to carbon foul its plug, but otherwise there are no nagging problems.
Anyway, I wanted to say "hi" and thank everyone for all the useful posts I've already found here!
New to the forum, new '81 CB650C
Re: New to the forum, new '81 CB650C
Welcome,
I work for the University (Virginia Tech) and live out in Craig Co. Just got my CB650 up and running today after going through pretty much everything to make sure all was tip-top. Did a 20 mile shakedown run this evening and all was well! We should meet up sometime.
Cheers!

Cool. Can you provide more details?

Charlie, I'd be glad to meet up with you for a ride some time after I get a handful more hours practice riding under my belt. I've spent twenty-five years on a road bicycle so traffic and such doesn't bother me, but I still feel awfully clumsy starting uphills, doing panic stops, etc. Have you had much of a chance to ride in town? How is it with all the students gone?

Well, I grew up riding in the NOVA area, so I'm used to the traffic and such.....not that I enjoy riding in heavy traffic. Haven't had a chance to register the vehicle yet (wanted to sort it out first) so just been keeping the shakedown rides on the back roads. Hopefully within the next couple weeks it'll be legal.
Cheers!

Welcome here!
Nice 1981 in good shape.
New plugs are always a good idea for a bike of unknown history.

Re: New to the forum, new '81 CB650C
I picked up an '81 CB650C parts bike across town for a song and a dance.
It has a little right-side damage. It looks like it suffered some mild right-side incident (both right side turn stalks are bent and have cracked lenses) and someone tried to get it running again and failed. Sadly, it has the wrong master brake cylinder assembly (is from a single-front-disc bike, but no idea which), missing the right front brake caliper, had the wrong (rusted out anyway) gas tank, and ... dangit!... no carb rack. At least it wasn't left outside!
Edit: de-huge-ified the image
