Another Noob to the site...
Another Noob to the site...
New to the site but not to motorcycles. I first got my Mototcyle endorsment back when I was 19 some 30+ years ago but didn't fully get into riding until about 6 years ago. I have broght several bikes back to life (and yes most of them are fankenbikes using whatever I had to get them running and street worthy)
Now for a breef story on what brings me to this site...
Last Friday I had a Daddy-Daughter date that was sponsored by our church. We almost were not able to go because my daughter is in a Color Guard Team (the ones who spin the flags with the band not the JROTC type) and there was a football game that night. I convinced the coach (who is also my wife ) to let here go. While we were there my daughter's best friends dad asked me if I wanted a bike. It was laud ( we were in a bowling ally) so I leaned in and ask "What was that?" and he replied "Don't worry it's free". I could not believe what he just said. I actually had a hard time keeping my composure. He told me to come over anytime to get the bike. He didn't know too much about the bike except that it was a Honda and it was a 650. So Saturday my daughter and I went over to their house to pick up the bike. Considering that it has not been registered for two and a half years it was in good shape. It currently does not run, it needs a new battery, new tires (these tires are dated 03 so they are ten years old ) carbs cleaned and brake system cleaned/rebuilt. It has a dent in the right side of the gas tank and the seat has a poor job on the recover but everything looks great. Here are a few pics...
Yes those are actual miles
The front tire was flat and I had to push it about three blocks to my house. It was a struggle but worth it. The temporary registration (it was a year old) said that it is a CB650SC... I knew that it was not a Nighthawk as soon as I saw it. It is an 1980 CB650C . Hopefully it wont take too long to get it road worthy.
By the way my daughter and I had a great time and still got her to the game in plenty of time for the half time show.

Re: Another Noob to the site...
Looks like this is going to be a project for next spring or summer (I have two projects for this winter).
Question:
Is there a wire wheel (front and back) that I can get that is a bolt on for this bike?

Re: Another Noob to the site...
The 82 Standard has a double piston caliper and a different disk.
Sure this will just fit on a 1980 fork?

Re: Another Noob to the site...
no the caliper is diff also but both interchange with the single piston items. The disks are the same diameter just the dual piston has a smaller "swept" area.

Re: Another Noob to the site...
An update on the bike. My son came home early from a church mission (medical reasons) so I told him that if he could get the bike running it would be his. He proceeded to clean the garage up so that he had room to work on it (bonus for me ). Now we have 5 bikes (only had two in there before with no room to work on them) in the garage with room to work on all of them. He pulled the carbs clean them up, checked for spark (all were good) but could not get it running. I pointed out to him that the choke cable was stuck so he manually closed the choke by reaching under the carbs and held them closed. The bike started and ran for a few second. Now the bike is officially his and he feels better about buying parts to get it back on the road.
Now he just needs;(in no particular order)
New choke cable
New tires - (he's going to use a set I had for my wife's XJ)
New battery
Rebuild the font master cylinder and calipers
Change all the fluids
Check/replace wheel baring
New brakes if needed
Check valve clearances

Re: Another Noob to the site...
Good to hear you got it started.
Obviously your benefit of the bike was a bit indirect.

I can't find any identification on the headers so sorry I don't know.
I could have painted your bike last week, I was in Denver area (Lakewood) visiting my daughters family. I brought a Yamaha XS1100 out to them (I know it's not a Honda ).
This is a rattle can job too even the graphics.

Re: Another Noob to the site...
Hey Coop! nice work on the tank, I've recently been playing with 2 part clears in a can as you can get a really good finish out of it without cleaning the paint pot, I know you were on the verge of selling, glad you still have it.
