It might help to really clean certain electrical connections--especially the CDI connections, the kill switch, and in the headlight bucket the black and black/white stripe wires coming from the kill switch.

You could also shoot just a little starter fluid in the air intake to get a better start for the time being.

If you do have the time to keep going on the project it can be very worthwhile once you get some of the problems solved. Took me about a year but my 81 is very dependable now and a good ride. Let us now how it works out!
