CB 650C Bobber
CB 650C Bobber
I've been working on my bobber re-build for a couple of months, It's starting to come together now, will post pictures of the rebuild as appropriate.
here's a few pictures of my Comstars, The bike theme is satin black, Gold and Copper plating
The rear rim is wider from a CBX1000, I had new tyres fitted last week, wheel balance was spot on (0.5 Gram on each) and the run out was 10 thou

Re: CB 650C Bobber
Looks like you really disassembled the comstars.
Brave.
Hope you knew what you did.

Re: CB 650C Bobber
I understand your comment and thought very carefully before starting and planned it for some time.
So I built a Jig to accurately drill out the rivets this is a long and tricky task.
I used aircraft grade fasteners and used tread lock as well as nyloc nuts
I had my new torque wrench calibrated by a professional company
And systematically torqued them in a star pattern.
The balance and run out are a fraction of the Honda specs
Time will tell, I will be keeping a close eye on them
cheers
Jim

Looking good!
How do you get your tires on the rims? Just curious as my process would ruin t

to be honest the motorcycle tyre specialist fitted them when I bought the tyres
I did ask them to take care, they didn't make a single mark

Re: CB 650C Bobber
When you said black gold and copper I couldn't imagine how that would play out. The copper bolts are way fkn cool looking!
What are your tire specs ? And could you describe how you went about cutting the seat lower llz. Maybe a few close up shots? I'm thinking about doing the same.
And what's with the two fill caps?

Re: CB 650C Bobber
here's some more pictures, the tyres are 140 rear, 120 fronts. the lower seat is more about 'what looks right' combined with a good triangulation for strength
more pictures below, the tank caps are being replaced with black pop-ups and you will see the location on the tank for the GPS speedo - this is a SpeedHut item and is very cool
I finished the wiring today, carb rebuild this week. The Tank is at the custom painters, back in 2 weeks time!

Really cool theme there! Looking very sharp!
I'm a bit curious about your rear rim. My rear rim is wobbling a bit and some rivets are loose so I'm looking to buy and fix a used set or modify what I got.
How much wider are CBX1000 ? Did you use only the outer rim or the whole wheel?
Did you have to modify the rim to make it fit? (other than drilling out the rivets)

Re: CB 650C Bobber
it is 0.5 inch wider on the rim but you do need to mate it to your 650 hub and spokes, if you take your time and plan and plan again it is not too difficult.
The hardest thing is accurately drilling out the old rivets without damaging the spokes or rim. I made a jig to do this. if you look at the rivets one side has a H on them and the other side is when the press mushrooms the rivet.
the side with the H is the side to drill from (and to make the jig for) as you can be sure the rivet head is round and you can always find the centre.
drill the head off and then the rivet will tap out, this leaves a 7.6mm hole, I drilled these out to 7.9mm and then fitted M8 hardware. No slack
I used a 1/4 inch drive torque wrench which is more accurate than my 1/2 inch drive. assemble all bolts and finger tight the nylocs, including the centre hub bolts (the old ones are destroyed when you remove them, but these are already M8.)
tighten in a star pattern the rim bolts, once done, then do the centre torques.
shout if you have any questions
cheers

Re: CB 650C Bobber
Thanks for the info, will have to look around for a CBX1000 rim then.
Last year I drilled out and replaced all bolts and rivets in the front wheel with high grade ones. I also used nyloc and a dab of Loctite then a digital torque wrench. It's not that hard but you want to get everything just right.
Like you I made a jig. A sleeve that fitted over the rivet and it had a hole through it for a drill bit. Still have it in the garage...somewhere... I hope... Even with a professional drill press it's quite tricky to get the center of the rivet without the guide sleeve.

Re: CB 650C Bobber
the only CBX1000 wheels I found were in the US, there are a couple of specialist breakers over there cost me $80 + $60 to ship it.
the CBX is quite rare and I expect to be hunted down by the owners club for using their spares for this
It does let you go wider on the tyre, the main limit I had was the clearance on the swinging arm width.
good luck
Jim
