1980 CB650 Custom
Just joined 650.com and wanted to share my bike. I bought it new with my first paycheck from my first job out of college. Used to ride a lot but it's been stored several times and lately has been sitting for a couple of years. Still runs but has some of the same issues mentioned in the blog: needs the choke open to run best. I have fixed the float bowl leaks but need to remove the carbs and clean the jets, etc. In my first attempt I couldn't get the assembled carbs to come off the manifold boot. Any suggestions?
Cheers!

Nice! So it runs, just not without a choke? Maybe you could run a tank. through with about 1/3 of a can of Seafoam in it. Maybe this will clean the jets. If you still need to remove the carbs for cleaning, use a thick piece of broom handle or a similar item. Slide it between the carbs and the engine and gently bump the carbs loose from the insulators. Use kind of a prying motion, but do it gently.

Re: 1980 CB650 Custom
Thanks for the tip. I cleaned out the tank, have sprayed some carb cleaner in the back side of the carbs and am running a tank of Seafoam through now. Each time out it's a little better, but accelerating without the choke isn't happening yet. Seems like the slow jets have some blockage. The accelerator pump was the last leak fixed so I'm planning on replacing it as well. Amazing that the parts are still available.
I could see some deposits in the float chambers when i replaced the float bowl seals. So going through the jets should help a lot. Could probably use some tips on adjustments when it's back together. Looking forward to having it running like the old days.

Don't use carb cleaner spray on the bank. It eats away at the rubber parts.

Re: 1980 CB650 Custom
Got it. No more carb spray, thanks for that tip as well. My ratio of Seafoam to fuel is only 1oz per gal. Sounds like it's ok to increase this to 1/3 can per tank? Maybe this will help clear things out, but I expect that in order to really dial the carbs in I'll be removing them for cleaning. I read the post (in your most important posts) about heating the insulators before carb removal. Very helpful, as were many of the other posts listed there. Thanks for the resources.
Rode my daughter to school (her request) on the bike this morning. She was smiling all the way.

You can definitely stand 1/3 of a can in a tank (I hope we are speaking of the same size can. If only seen one size). Make sure you have a good inline fuel filter, as the Seafoam will also break gunk loose from inside your tank.

Cool. The tank is pretty darn clean. No rust or other contaminants that I can see. I have run Seafoam through the system in the past, so it looks good. The can of Seafoam I have 16 oz. I'll give it a go as a part of the overall process. I'm an optimist... so maybe it will do more good than I think. Thanks for your advice.
Re: 1980 CB650 Custom
Must be living right. The increased % of Seafoam to fuel mixture made a significant difference in performance. The bike is running strong without choke after warm up today. Still hesitates a little in the low rpm's from a standing start, but overall is much improved. We'll see what happens after this tank. Any problems running another one of the same mixture to continue the clean out if needed?
Bought a new set of Pirelli's to replace the 25 year old Dunlop Touring Elites. Lots of tread left but not trusting the old rubber. Looking forward to some good riding this weekend. Thanks again for the Seafoam tip.

Re: 1980 CB650 Custom
Have you tried a tank without Seafoam since your initial treatment? The Seafoam will inhibit your performance to a degree. Try one without it and see how it does.
Wise choice replacing the tires. Old tires are hard, and will not grip the road properly--not to mention the risk of catastrophic failure.

I have the original shop manual along with the promotional brochure and was looking through the spec's this morning. Interesting that of all the spec's listed it doesn't state the horsepower. Does anyone know what the actual hp is?

I have only seen information listed on a couple of websites.

The 63 is what honda claimed. 50 seems to be closer.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
Re: 1980 CB650 Custom
Thanks for the links and info. While my bike is running better and better I still have a few carb tweaks left to sort out with a hesitation in low RPM from a standing start. It's strong & without a choke after 2500.
I ran across this fairly detailed site with a step-by-step Keihin carb rebuild that has some good pictures and insights in the event anyone is interested. Hope it's not a repeat of a listing already posted here somewhere.

Not a bad write up, but there are a few rather obvious errors.
