Dirty carbs.

Postby Spyug53 » Fri Feb 20, 2015 9:29 pm

So this week I stripped and dipped the carbs from the new to me 81.

2 years back they had been "professionally" cleaned but the bike never ran when they were reinstalled and my buddy just parked her in frustration.

I think I know why she wouldn't run:

The sad thing is I recommended the pro shop to my friend and they charged him $300.

Hopefully now they will work correctly and the bike will run once again.

I'll let you know.

cheers,
A.

This is just the residue from the soaking?

I can't tell what that is.

Yes residue from the soaking.

Now the externals of the carbs were not super clean in some of the nooks and crannies, so some of that is in there too but a fair amount is from the insides.

I noticed the cavity in which the air "pumps" reside had some hard calcium like deposits that I had to chip out and grind out with the dremel tool. And float bowls too had some hard gunge.....but no green algae this time  .

Over the last 4 or 5 years I have cleaned about 10 sets of carbs and while not the absolute worst, these do rank near the top.

I guess what I am trying to illustrate is you really need to dunk carbs to get them clean. Shots of spray generally won't do it.

Hopefully, they will now run as designed.

I'll let you know.
