Would my odometer work if my cable was shot? I pulled my cluster halfway off today, didn't disconnect any of the plug ins. I unscrewed the speedo cable (its got a little metal rod running through it). My odo worked before and now it doesn't. I'm guessing I jacked the cable up some how? My tach kind worked though. Went to 1,000 while in first and then stopped. Idk what's going on.

When you were inspecting it, the "metal rod" inside the cable shroud probably slipped off the gear at the front axle. The drive gear will have a little tongue that spins when the front wheel turns. The cable will have a fork on the end that must fit over this tongue. You will probably need to disconnect the cable at the axle and visually ensure that it is hooked up right.

Clean the electrical contacts too. Try Dennis Kirk for a cable. New there is usually cheap.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

You know, Folsoml, you're probably right. Will I have to remove the brake and wheel to reattach the speedo cable? Wish it wasn't so rainy here at the moment. Probably won't be able to get around to checking the cord till sat/sun. If the odo was working before, does that mean the cable was hooked up and my speedo is actually the culprit? Because after my speedo stopped working, my odo still turned. But noe nothing works due to jamming the cable around.

If the odometer was working correctly all the time, then the cable was probably not the problem. You should be able to service it with the wheel in place.

Well, I just checked the cable. Its OK. Spun on both ends. It is NOT broken whatsoever. One end in a square and the other, thats attached to the wheel, looks like a flat head screw. Anyway, i reseated it at the back of the gauge cluster and used a drill to spin it. The odometer reads it and advances forward but no movement on the speedo or tach.

I guess that means my cluster is jacked up?

I should probably make a new thread by now with all these issues that keep popping up. My battery seems to have gassed out. I checked the levels and it had no water in it. What could cause this to happen? Its a 3 week old battery.

Well the battery was charged and it holds a charge. If that means anything. I guess its time to bust out the multimeter and start trying to isolate the charging issue. Just my luck.

So, bike off, key out of ignition, I'm getting 12.6 v off battery
At idle its about the same, 12.4-12.6 volts.
At a fast idle, 2k-3k I'm getting 13.5-13.8v.

Are these numbers too low? I didn't really go higher than 2k-3k. No tach. These readings were taking just after I got back from 10 mile zip around town. Do I need to let the beast cool off before taking readings?

If you are getting readings in the 13's the battery is probably charging fine. It should be a little higher, but as long as it is increasing when you increase revs, it's probably OK.

So, is going onto the r/r, rotor and stator a necessary next step? Or should I be alright with my readings I got. Have class tonight or I'd connect the circular leads from the multimeter to the battery and rev it up a bit higher to see if she does break 14 volts. I might be able to get into that after class.

Quick side question. Fixing/replacing my gauge cluster is next on my list, if the odometer is working but tach needle and speedo needle don't move but a teeny tiny bit does that mean the cluster is at fault? Is it possible, with the odo spinning, that the gear in the front wheel is jacked up? Or does the fact that the odo works rule the gear as being working?
