Handlebar switches - right hand side

Postby mojoblues » Sun Oct 16, 2016 5:31 am

Hi,
my switches housing is falling apart to the point that throttle cables are held by wire I have attached. All the plastic is almost in pieces..
Is there any substitute for original ones? What are my options? It doesn't have to look original, I just need it to function well and not to cost arm and leg.
Thanks

You should be able to use most aftermarket controls. As long as it has all of the same buttons it will do the job. Most old Jap controls could be fitted on too. It's just a matter of wiring the connector you have now to the new-to-you controls. Someone on here could probably help you out with that. If the replacement controls don't have a wiring diagram available you would need to spend a little time with an electrical meter on the ohm setting to figure out what wire does what.

edit; Make sure they are for a 7/8" handlebar!!

Ok, thanks for the reply.
I have ordered throttle assembly http://www.kickstartershop.de/de/gas-dreh-griffe-gasgriff-cnc-schwarz and my friend has given me left hand side controls which seem to have everything in one place. I will see if I can connect everything to the left side or find someone to do it for me, since I have no diagram for it... or talent :)
The only thing is, I would have to put the kill switch on that red button with triangle, everything else is there...

Well so long there is used parts to get and use this is ok, but hypothetically speaking, what if it's impossible to get any part that is from a Honda? Is there any generic controls that can be used instead? :?:

I think so, this is I believe from Yamaha bike. I've seen generic one for sale, the main problem was (for me) that part for the dual throttle is missing. Also, many of them look really cheap.
I was told that many jap bikes from that era used similar switches. I will see if I can find somebody to fit this one for me, in that case all the controls would be on the left side. I'm not sure I will like that...

You don't know what Yamaha that is from do you? I might be able to decipher the wiring diagrams for you.

Actually, I did image search on this switch and it turns out it's for Yamaha atv, but aftermarket part http://kglracing.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=653_3322&products_id=103684

Since these switches are almost new (had to resolder one wire), I did what you said tario and checked all the wires to see what they connect to. Everything works fine.
So far it looks like all I'm going to lose is parking light, which is fine by me. I hope I'm not forgetting anything.
When my pushpull assembly comes in, I'll try to connect it with wires from my old switch.

Well fortunately my problem is not at the throttle side. I have lost one of the bolts that holds the control at the left side and replaced it with another one that at first was to long. I shortened it but the problem i have now is it only rotates when i try either to tighten it or loosen it. So what would my options be if there was no Honda parts to obtain?
I seems that the metal part inside where the holes for the bolts i have loosened from the plastic material, :?:
so how do I loosen the bolt without that part rotates freely?

I think I know which part you mean. It's a little tube with rough outside? It is supposed to be ledged in somewhere in plastic. That was one of the reasons my right hand switch fell apart.

If you can use a flat blade screwdriver to pry the switch open a bit the threaded insert might grab onto something enough to unthread. Then grease up your bolt so it can't be glued to anything, superglue your threaded insert into place, then bolt that side together so it sets up correctly.(like i said use lots of lube on the bolt, don't want that glued in there)

I couldn't find any wiring details for this switch, someone will have to see what connects to what with a meter....

Hmm, that could work but i wonder if its possible to pry enouhg without damage anything?

The tip i got from a former MC mechanic is to drill from the side far enough in and lock the threaded part so i can unscrew the bolt.

MEHall, have you tried taking out other screws, if that one is just spinning, I think you should be able to open it up?

Hmm, i think i've seen a picture of where the treaded part is located and it looked you just cant pry it out without any damage. But as i said i got the tip to do some drilling from the side and drill so far in it's possible to stop that part from rotating. I'll check up on it before bike leaves the winter hibernation.
