My CB650

Postby Riche » Mon Oct 23, 2017 11:17 am

Hi All, I have been lurking here for a few weeks so thought I would say "Hi" and let you see My CB650.

So what I bought at the begining of September 2017 was a 4 boxes of parts and a frame with an engine on a crate.
Here is what it was supposed to look like when it was last assembled. From my undersatnding the bike hadn't been run for a very long time and was stored in a leaking shed which had resulted in the engine seizing up. Another engine had been sourced by the previous owner and rebuilt by one of his mechanical friends apparently a Yamaha Tech? .. The parts included in the deal were supposed to add up to 90% of the bike.
The parts missing were head light, seat and a few other annoying parts which would come to light as the build progressed and some I am still trying to find even now.

So I had the frame shot blasted and had done welding on a few parts i wasn't happy with then I painted it.
This was a mistake as I later ended up welding a loop and brackets etc.. But anyway you can see from the picures the story so far really.

The rest of these images are in no perticular order..

I quite like the brat style but the cafe seat. I didn't like the long brat seats. Also didn't want passengers :) .. I think this bike looks awesome http://www.bikeexif.com/honda-cb650 So was kinda leaning in this direction.

The bike in the link is very nice but I just don't get this header wrapping thing, if I've got chrome I want it to sparkle. Call me an old fart but lots of years ago I knew blokes that were doing this "Brat" style to BSA's and Triumph's but they were called customs, the craze then was to mount the speedo "in" the fuel tank and have nothing up front other than headlamp, bars, throttle and levers. I am totally different in that I like bikes in standard condition as there are so few about.

I am with you wanting to restore sensitively. But as you probably know cb650 are getting thin on the ground and people want big bucks. When I was a teenager the 400 four was the bike I wanted but couldn’t afford. I think this is in the same mould.

Ah they were the days! I bought a 400/4 for £100 and rode it into the ground, when the engine blew after a year I sold it on for spares for more than I paid for it  I'll be selling on my CB650 Custom in the spring as I just don't need three bikes and I'm in the process of fixing up my 82 Nighthawk. A bit like you with the 400/4, the first time I saw a Nighthawk I needed one, the first time I saw one around 1982 was the last time I saw one until bought mine a few months ago.

The frame has been repainted using a different paint than before.
Quite pleased with how it looks now.

How did you figure out the rear clearance for the hoop I'm working on a 79 650 myself and am in the process of fitting that up and choosing a seat.

Small update:
Took the cb650 for an MOT
Image
Passed with one advisory - Non standard chimney..
On the way there it wouldn't rev pass 4,000 .. or go over 50mph ..
So when arrived home I drilled the main jets to 120 or (1.2mm) .. Now its awesome.

Went out to visit a friend on Sunday who is restoring a Capri at his workshop.

Things to do:
Still need to get a seat cover made in black leather (our local lady who does this type of work has 5 week backlog). :(
I have covered the seat in black duct tape for the time being.
Have ordered a smaller number plate..

Hope your all enjoying the weather
And i passed the motorcycle test last month.. :)
