Cb750 ignition

Postby themaddrebel » Thu May 10, 2018 11:52 am

Is it possible that since I'm chopping my 650, I could use basic wire harness and use points from a cb550?

I'm confused by the text of your question compared to the thread title. Are you asking if CB550 or CB750 parts will work? If CB550, I highly doubt it. The CB550 used a point system (like you mention in the text) but it is not remotely similar to the pulse generator system used by the CB650 (and the CB750 as mentioned in the title). A CB750 (1979 to 1982) pulse generator looks very similar to the on the CB650, but I'm not sure if the sizes are the same.

Sorry, I meant 650 in title. I figured if I swapped the cb550 points plate with the pulse plate in the 650, I could have basic ignition

I'm not sure what it would take to do such a thing.

Me either, but it would be a interesting project though.

You will need a cam for the circuit breaker, too. So the crankshaft needs a modification, too.
I think the mount of the pulser magnet is screwed into the right side of the crankshaft so basically it should be removable.
Some people here got it out but I think that was not that easy because the part is quite thin and susceptible.
But no idea if it is the same for CB550 and if one can just swap these crankshaft ends.
I'd think there is a good chance but there is also a good chance that it looks basically the same but small differences will make it not that straightforward as it seems. This appears often enough when CB650 parts are to be interchanged between models.
