1982 cb900 - Where to source choke spring? And is this broken/bent?

Postby renegi9036 » Tue Aug 08, 2023 5:20 pm

Figure I'll start new threads for google to index in case someone has a similar question.

Firstly, I found how the choke spring should be set...but question...once the choke lever would be pulled up, would i see immediate action/reaction from the other lever (blue circle in pic)? What happens is that the blue lever doesn't catch until the choke is aprx 3/4 of the way up. But, then it doesnt guide it back down...which leads me to believe my spring is kaput.

How can I source a new one?

Here are nice pictures that illustrate a similar problem:

In this case one end of the thinner spring got out of its groove.
In your case I think both ends of the smaller spring are in correct position but the spring really does not look like as it is under tension.
So it either needs to be installed in the same way but with one more turn around the cam or it is broken.

And this picture shows how the springs should look like when installed correctly for the piston carbs

Quite the same except the choke lever is plastic there.

I don't know that your choke spring is broken, but I do think it may need to be reinstalled the correct way. It is a bear to do but you can do it if you have patience.

Mike Nixon did a good video on getting it setup for the early 80s Honda CV carbs: https://youtu.be/AgHnSOZL3xA

any options to mcgiver something? spring is kaput. might just weld or fashion a screw to push the lever, seems simple enough.

Wish I had an answer for you. Choke springs are typically part of the Choke Link Set. Yours in particular is P/N 16017-438-405. eBay is empty, as is CMSNL.

The only thing I could find is this eBay listing, which is for a few loose choke parts for a GL1100: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115809389096. It seems to have a choke spring, but there is no guarantee that it'd fit yours, as the whole assembly is a different P/N than yours. But, for $15 it might not hurt to try.

During my 1981 CB650 CV build i purchased an old set on ebay from someone...pretty rough shape but worked for the parts I needed. Perhaps the parts you request are decent.........I'm unsure if your carbs are the same as mine on the 650. Let me know.

(dont look at the carbs in the plastic bin, those go to my 1979 CB650.)

this video helped me immensely for the spring install.

count the amount of winds. don't want too many otherwise it will bind, don't want too few either.

again mine is a CB650 so not sure if the same as your carbs.

Time for you to rebuild your carb assembly....rebuild kits are everywhere online. make sure to document with images your disassembly.

when you get it apart you should be able to bend that piece back into position, perhaps your spring is still salvageable also.
