Re: hey
Welcome here, John!
Good decision! But always hard to start with a new bike when internal engine parts are gone. Was the cam chain really torn? (-> valves bent?) And what about primary chain tensioner? Just to be sure or also damaged? Be careful in case there was much metal or dirt on the oil filter screen. Maybe this engine was mistreated and it is more economic to have a look for another one. At least you should check everything before you start ordering parts. Have a look on gearwheels, internal gear shift mechanism and piston rings axial play. Valve mechanics/camshaft is obvious to check and rocker arms cams are worth a look, too.
Installing the cam chain tensioner correctly may be a bit tricky, but there should be a description with pictures here in the forum.

Hello John, and welcome to the forum.
There are not many, if any, of the engine parts that are interchangeable with other SOHC Hondas. Even if the 650 is said by some people to be just an over bored CB550, there are more to it than just that. Even if the 650 cylinders can be bolted straight on the 550 bottom end, the internals are not a direct match.
In fact, some people claim that the CB650 are the best SOHC engine Honda built.
If you are familiar with rebuilding the SOHC Hondas, the 650 shouldn't give you much problem really.

trouble is , many of the internals are NLA
I bought rear tensioner and front guide from a salvage yard in CT
a full gasket set from Ohio
wth the dohc , the engine needs to be pulled for any engine work, I like the idea of being able to pull the head , w/o remving the engine
I am going to relap and do the valve seals
hopefully be able to re-ring this engine[havent checked on rings, yet ]
Ill post pics later
ps.. maybe we can get this forum humming, gotta find a few more members, somewheres
the more, the merrier
