Fork swap
Re: Fork swap
I used 6oz. of fork oil. No air assist; a plain-jane 79 cb650....tubes looked good and sliders too. When i did the install i put the 8-notch side down in both forks as per the photo i attached here. I'll drain some fluid out of both forks and run it to work tonite and post results Wednesday. I did dip them in oil before i drove them into the tubes....just at a loss...other than maybe too much fluid; can't seem to figure it out. Checked my other set that was leaking and they had the same type of seal installed that took into leaking after 1 year...

Re: Fork swap
I drained out some fluid; sidestand method: pull drain bolt and count to 2 then plug hole; did it for both forks. Ride was a little better; still leaks. I have to check the fork tubes again for any scratches.....any thing else to look for? No cash right now for another set of forks; even used ones have no guarantee on seals.
Re: Fork swap
Pulled the forks apart that the shop did for me yesterday; one had the seal in crooked; the other was also; just not as bad. So i did gently pried out the seals and cleaned them. Then i was very generous with axle grease on the inside of the slider and on the seal. I filled with 5oz. of transmission fluid(not gonna wast good fork oil if they leak again); i also smeared grease on the dust cap as well. Did a squash test for a few minutes to get the fluid moving. Just have to install and do a road test to know for certain. The seals in these forks were the same type as i bought when i started this thread. A gouge in one fork tube was a little deep where the seal sets; not sure if i made it or the shop, other fork has one further down.

Re: Fork swap
Was into the local Honda shop and they had on hand a set of the OE fork seals, got them for $22; numbers on pkg:01255-KBH-003....these go in the runner's forks; after i try out the set from the parts bike again after the minor adjustments.
Re: Fork swap
I installed the Honda seals in the good forks; i "borrowed" some Ultratrak Hydraulic/Transmission fluid from work that we use in the payloaders, no weight markings on the barrel. Anyhow after running to work and back 110kms i got no more leaks. I just have to change the fluid back to the 10w fork oil as the payloader fluid is a little rough on the road then i'm good to go! Wasn't going to waste good fork oil if they started leaking again.
Re: Fork swap
Good to know which seals are no buy.
Although you found it out the hard way.

Re: Fork swap
That's true; but there may be other after market seals out there that are good; i will stay clear of the K & S brand.
Re: Fork swap
Is the stock seal the same construction with two circular springs or is it build up completely different?
Did you see a noticeable lip there?

Re: Fork swap
The OE seal had a noticeable lip and circular spring on both sides. The other ones had no lip but the two springs as the box had a listing of over 100 machines that they would work on.
Re: Fork swap
Guess that's the problem. Missed it on the pictures, too.my79650 wrote:The other ones had no lip ...

Re: Fork swap
True; since it was 1st time doing fork seals myself i thought the other brand was properly made; so much for that.
Re: Fork swap
Been awhile since i did this replacement; but now the right fork seal is leaking again after a year. Noticed it when i had the bike for a spin before i pulled the carbs for cleaning. On the wait list for now; carb problems priority for now.
Re: Fork swap
Sounds like a quite poor durability.

Re: Fork swap
I lucked out and got genuine Honda seals when i did this last. The right fork could have a scratch on it as well. I got 1 straight tuble left, other is bent. Since its not getting fluid on the brake rotor i'll just top it up for now.
