Fork swap
Re: Fork swap
Must be something wrong with your forks. did my 80 10 years ago and still no problems.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
Re: Fork swap
I just changed the left fork; it was leaking the worst. Using the left off my parts bike. Will find out if it leaks when i go for a drive. I got a Honda CM400 Twin 1979 also for parts, so i am going to pull a fork off it and see if it fits the 650 triple tree; if it does i'll get a new tire for the silver comstar and use them.
Re: Fork swap
Strange.
Are you sure you installed them in the correct orientation?
My fork seals are probably still stock (>65000mls).

Re: Fork swap
No; my local shop did them for me; on a trade; my old blown up 250 Custom for new seals and labor. Seemed good at the time. I will see how this goes and if i have to i'll buy a new set and change them myself.
Re: Fork swap
If anyone here was going to use forks off a 400 honda twin; you need to swap out the triple tree; was too small to fit the cb650 tree. Just thought everyone here needed to know.
Re: Fork swap
Got a new set of fork seals K&S Technologies 35mm x 48mm x 11mm stock no. 16-1020. Both sides has that little piece of steel wound in the groove. One side has 8 little notches; the other is smooth. No markings stating this end up.

Re: Fork swap
The smaller circular spring to the bottom. Especially if there is a sharp lip.
Sorry, the pictures don't provide that much info.

Re: Fork swap
Sorry bout that; cell phone pics. The smooth side had small numbers on it and each side has those springs in them. I intend on putting these in the forks off the parts bike. The right tube is bent so i will use the tube from the runner for replacement. I will get a few photos of the job and see which way the old seals are positioned with any markings to set the new ones the same way.
Re: Fork swap
Got them changed; fairly easy for 1st time. I replaced the seals on the spare set from parts bike; there was really dirty fluid that came out of them, Swapped the right fork tube over from the runner. One set of springs was a little soft so i used the stiffer set in the rebuild.

Re: Fork swap
Before i pulled the tubes off i used kerosene and flushed out all the crap. No socket so i improvised to install the new seals. It worked out fine.

Re: Fork swap
Isolator was old and hard; couldn't smack it like a large socket but it did the job. I know it said 5.7oz of fork oil in the manual; i installed six oz....used what i had in the kitchen for measuring cup. If its too firm i'll drain some fluid out.
Re: Fork swap
Wow....two days...these new seals are leaking too...damn it to hell! No scoring or scratches on the fork tubes of the inside of the sliders. I dipped them in fork oil before i installed them.....maybe the seals are just junk from the factory. Gonna call the Honda shop and see if i can order a set of original equipment type....won't ever use K&S Tech seals again! These are the same type the shop put in my runner's forks 1 year ago. I checked them when i took the right fork tube for the parts bike set.
Re: Fork swap
Strange. But you can still try them out upside down.
BTW, how much oil per fork leg?
