I should have read the whole thread, sorry. I've used Powersports Plus before, and they list three different part numbers.

http://www.powersportsplus.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/1981/CB650+A/CYLINDER+HEAD+COVER/parts.html

Same story, though....they list three #'s, but with the caveat "Use up to Engine SN 2206140" on all three numbers! If my engine starts with 230XXX, which one do I use?

That's the same thing that Motogrid says, but they list just one part #.

Found this on ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-CB-650-Z- ... 231e4dec2c

Notice that it mentions RC03 in the title. They also list gaskets for the RC08 and RC05, but don't say what the difference is or list a Honda parts #.
They're also in the UK.

Measure the diameter of your old gasket. Pressed flat side should be close to 3mm. In this case any of these should fit. If significantly thinner or thicker say ±0.5mm, the depth of the groove of the higer engine numbers is probably different.

I will try to find and meaure an old gasket and moreover the groove in the head cover after the weekend if you can wait.

Honda did strange parts renumbering some time ago. E.g. "460" is the mid parts number for RC05 models while there are no RC05E engines at all. There are also ignition advancers with "426" and "460" stampd on them and this seems the only difference.

I won't have the head off for a while. I've read that removing the valve cover allows you to fit the engine in the 500/550 frame, since it doesn't have the removable section of the frame.
I was hoping to have a gasket on hand whenever we get around to this. I have a while, though.

Here's what I picked up last week, minus the spoked rear wheel. The seller wanted to keep the tire for his bike.

Found these, with boots, on the SOHC4 site. He's also including some random hardware I was missing.
They're from a 1981. Should work with my head, right?

Those should work fine.
The round part in the top left of this picture, with the hoses on it, is a vacuum shutoff for the fuel. I have read a lot of accounts of them causing fuel flow problems, but if they are working properly, they are an added safety to keep fuel from flowing to the carbs when the bike is off if you forget to turn off the petcock.

I thought that was part of a vacuum petcock system. If need be, I can remove it, right? Remember, I'm putting this engine in a CB500. Not sure where I'd get a vacuum signal (other than the sync ports on the manifolds, and that's not really how they were intended to be used).

Yes, you can remove it if you need to. The vacuum hooks to the small barb on the vacuum shutoff. I'll try to take a look at my '81 tonight, to see where it comes from. I haven't done any work on the '81 because I am still trying to get a title for it, so I don't know from memory.

How did the choke work on those carbs? Was it a cable that ran up to the handle bars?

I forgot there were 2 small barbs... The small barb on the top is a vent. The small barb on the bottom is the vacuum.

This is where the other end of the vacuum line attaches:

That is exactly how it was setup.

Okay....I'll have to pick up a choke cable then.

I bought an after market one. It does not like to stay choked, even with the knob adjusted to hold it out. I then bought a new one from the dealer. I would suggest taking that route from the beginning.

My '78 550K has the knob on the handlebar clamp. It's held on with a small bracket under one of the bolts. On ebay, I see a 650 choke cable that's part of the clutch lever.
I assume I can make the 550 style work...

This is how it is mounted on the SOHC CB650s
http://www.ebay.com/itm/79-CB650-CB-650-UPPER-BAR-BRACKET-FUSE-BOX-CLEAN-FREE-SHIP-/380370970739?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item588fe06873&vxp=mtr

The bracket it built into the handle bar clamp/fuse block holder.
